Fine Molds Kawasaki Ki-10 – The Sequel
I’ve already sung the praises of this kit in a previous article, so I won’t say more than “buy this kit,” this time around. My earlier build was one of my first kits completed after a long sabbatical, and I wanted to see how I could do applying some of the new skills I’ve acquired and refined over the last couple of years.
One new thing I tried was a technique I devised to subtly accent the wing and control surface ribs. After priming with Mr. Surfacer 1500, I sprayed the wings with Tamiya JA Grey mixed with 50% white. Then I went over that with a couple coats of gloss clear. Finally I sprayed the whole model with non faded JA Grey. After the paint cured, I very gently wet sanded the wings and control surfaces with a Tamiya sanding sponge, just brushing along the tops of the ribs to expose the lighter paint below. The gloss clear was to help me avoid cutting through to the primer. I have to say I’m quite satisfied with the results. It created a subtle effect that enhances the rib detail without overdoing it.

I have built one of these and it's exactly as you described. I'm surprised we don't see more of them done. Yours is outstanding, and I especially like how the paint looks. I will definitely keep that trick of wet sanding to reveal the underlying color in my bag of tricks. I did it once on a Corsair to reveal the zinc chromate and bare metal colors on top of the wing by the oil coolers, but it looks even better when done on a cloth covered aircraft.
