North American FJ-4B Fury

August 22, 2022 · in Aviation · · 7 · 0.9K

This is the ID kit that I picked up in the sale bin at Colpar's in Denver about 8 years ago. It really hasn't been on the SOD that long. We moved from Colorado back to Kansas in 2014. - For a vacuform, this was well done with regard to shape. - The biggest headache was the intake trunking. Therefore, it has an intake cover. - the cockpit interior comes from many different places. Resin MartinBaker ejection seat. Archer details used- both interior and exterior. Airscale instrument decals. Many other pieces used from the parts box. - scratch built landing gear with wheels from parts box. -The drop tanks are modified F-86 tanks. The ones on the Fury were bigger for more fuel. -Added exterior detail that was needed and scratchbuilt. -New vacuformed canopy was made. -Once I got around to painting, I used Tamiya white primer spray on full kit, then Model Master, Tamiya, Alclad gloss coat, Testor's flat coat. -Decals were from several different sheets plus custom ones by club member Ted Berard. Made my own fuselage streaks. - This recently was entered in IPMS/national convention in Omaha. It didn't place. Looks nice from a distance, but I was getting tired of the build. Devil is in the details.

  1. Another superb one, Steve! Hard to believe it is a vac!
    Congratulations!

  2. Fabulous build. Final result looks like a injection kit. Great job!

  3. Respectable is a good word. Especially, when it come to being a vacuform kit in 1/32nd. The cockpit photos are impressive and the landing gear comes out well. The painting is smart. Shake and bake is not apart of the lexicon of vacuform but, elbow grease and old school thinking makes the day.

    Two thumbs up Steve.

  4. ID Vacs require you to bring a helluva lot to the table - knowledge, talent, skill, tenacity, sturbbornness, patience - and you brought it it spades with this. One of the best vacs I have seen in a loooonnnnggg time.

  5. Thanks for your replies, gents
