Tamiya 1/20 F1 SF70H

October 20, 2022 · in Automotive · · 18 · 1.1K

Introduction

This is, of course, a , in fact it was the Scuderia's 2017 entry in the Formula One World Championship.

About the kit

released this scale kit in 2018, and so far, it's their last F1 kit apart from a couple of re-releases from years gone by. The box art and the instructions only mention the Ferrari name in small print, and all Ferrari models, in all scales, whether race cars or road cars, have been deleted from Tamiya's on-line catalogue, not sure why.

Although there's no engine detail it's quite a complex kit, especially with regard to the various aerodynamic appendages, and it pays to follow the instructions.
I built it entirely standard from the box, painted with Tamiya Italian Red. I'm sorry but I didn't take any pictures during the build.

About the car

The SF70H was built to suit the new requirements for the 2017 championship, mainly revisions to the aerodynamics, in an effort to make racing more exciting and encourage overtaking.

Ferrari's two drivers, multi world champion Sebastian Vettel, ably assisted by Finn Kimi Raikkonen, were a formidable line-up, and, indeed won at the opening race in Australia.

Thereafter their success rate dwindled, and the Tifosi's jubilant cries of “Forza Ferrari” came to nothing.

Thanks for looking, and happy modelling.

  1. This is a wonderful Ferrari, my friend George! You tackled this challenging kit with your usual excellent standards. The result is really unique. Who knows why the "Ferrari" name is not mentioned as expected: having to do with licensing maybe? Ahhhhhh, today's politically correct days...

  2. A great Formula 1 car, George @chinesegeorge
Your skills on four wheel subjects are equally great compared with your two wheels subjects.
No naming, but everybody knows which car this is.
    Well done

  3. Your going to tell me that this ain't the real thing. Great job!

  4. Excellent work, George! I really need to build a car.

  5. Beautiful Ferrari, very nice. Gotta love the Italian Red.

This is an incredible build. Like some of the others, I thought it was the real thing at my first glance. Well done ! I definitely pressed the "like" button.

    Too bad about the Ferrari name and how it seems lawyers can mess things up. It does seem that money is the root cause. Greed can ruin everything. I say that money and greed could destroy a iron anvil, using only a rubber hammer and nothing else... );

Take care my friend. It's nice to see your work in the headlines.

  7. Hi Louis @lgardner, thank you, your comments are always so kind and generous. To be honest, I enjoy taking the pictures as much as building the models. I think the background is the key to realism, as per the bases you use in your aircraft models. If you just plonk your finished model on the cutting board and take pictures while the paint’s still drying it’s never going to look real, that’s my opinion anyway. Happy modelling.

  8. Splendid rendtion sir I'd have no idea how to go about doing something like this

  9. Hi Mark @markh, thank you for taking the time to look and your kind comment. I’m sure your modelling talent and experience could produce a fine model of any genre.

  10. Great build. I'm a Raikkonen fan and miss him in the paddock. We tiffosi are still waiting for Kimi to step down as reigning Ferrari champ. Maybe next year if they can get on top of the tyres like Red Bull.

    Thanks for posting.

  11. Cheers, Richard @rbungay, I see that Sainz has grabbed pole for the US Grand Prix, it would be great to see him turn that into a win.

  12. Nice build mate!
So Tamiya and Ferrari have fallen out? They used to be an official licensed product.

  13. Nice George, I think I need more F1 kits in my life, you inspired me.
