Viking Spear...1/48 Saab J32B Lansen, Svenska Flygvapnet

So, after Harvard and Saab 17, here´s my dad´s third and last Swedish subject for now.
As with all HB/Trumpeter kits the HB has its shape and accuracy issues but it looks like a Lansen. The only thing my dad did was engraving some missing detail in front of the fin.
The Saab Lansen had its first flight in 1952, the last ones were retired in 1997. The lansen was used as attack, fighter, recon, training, target tug an electronoc warfare aircraft.
With the HB kit you can build a "B" fighter or an "E" ECM aircraft. Funny thing is, HB didn´t add any ordnance for the B but some for the E, HB added decals for the B but not for the E...
Painted in different shades of MRP-215 Swedish Army Olive Drab 325, underside painted with MRP-009 White Aluminium. Moose Republic Decals used, added some seatbelts.

Model shows the last built Lansen which spent most of its life with Försökscentralen (FC), the Swedish Airforce test center.

P.S.: added two pics of my parents classic Saab 96 2-stroke back in the 70ies

  1. Excellent result, Reinhard @grimreaper
The entire build looks great and especially the shading looks super.
    Beautiful classic Saab 96.
Recently, July this year, a Lansen did visit the airfield Volkel near my house. It was a wonderful view.

  2. Yet another superb result of a very interesting subject, Fam. Spreitzhofer! The 2-stroke Saab 96 must have been quite a Car!

  3. Nice work on this one, Reinhard. Your dad did well. Thanks for posting the group photos. I never realized the Lansen was that big.

  4. What a beauty! Excellent build!

  5. Really like it - especially the shading on the OD color. I have one of these to build in 1/72 - will keep this as a reference!

  6. Nice work as usual and a super result.
Those 2-stroke Saabs were fun. My mother had one in the 60s. They were also safe, since she lost it in an accident where it rolled over and was totalled, and she got out without even a scratch.

  7. Great looking Lansen! The green colour looks spot on. As it is said, the general outlines are good if not perfect, at least it looks like a Lansen. The only things bothering my eyes are the air ejectors just above the intakes, they should be opened up and not blanked off. Also, there is something odd about the forward end of the belly tank. Not even the Tarangus´ Lansen is true in all details so there are certainly some lines that are hard to replicate for the modelling companies. The Lansen could be seen sporting quite a few different schemes and the FC:s black and white high visibility schemes make them stand out in any collection. As they flew in harsh climates and for many many years, they also tended to get quite worn and weathered.

Speaking of the belly tank: the Swedish air force used to be famous for flying in peacetime as they wold in case of war, thus they flew at extreme low level at most times. There is a famous story, true or not..., about a Lansen going down really low over the waters surface...so low the belly tank was torn off!

And speaking of the good ole Saab two stroke. It used to go by the nick name "The Jungle Drum" as it made a puttering tapping sound, like a conga drum.

  8. Looks great, I always liked the look of this Swedish bird,
