Monogram, 1:72 Scale, Curtiss P-6E "Hawk"

This is one of those things that just happen, and as events would have it, this kit and a number of other small bi-plane fighters from , fell into my lap. I managed to get this little beauty, a F-11C, a F4B-4 and a P-36-all in 1:72 scale, and all from the original release lot of 1968.

Not having many 'bipes' under my belt I thought I would take a whack at all of these. Problem was, if you use the pilot, you'll be OK with not adding any interior parts. If you don't, you're faced with scratch building a cockpit. Enter Star Fighter Decals. They not only made resin cockpits for these little kits, but they also offer decals AND stainless steel PE rigging. The only issue was, that some of these are out of production now, so a little bit of digging on the internet got me what I needed for all of them.

Since these were first run kits, there was little flash or clean up. I needed to reprint the instruction sheets which also were found online. Kits went together with very little effort. The moulded in cabane struts really helped everything line up between upper and lower wings. Both the resin cockpit and the PE fit with very little surgery as well. The antenna was Infini Aerial Rigging for 1:72 scale.

All in all, it was a really neat little kit and I will be sure to post the others as they come of the "production line"
I used Star Fighter Decals for the decals, resin cockpit and PE rigging. I used a combination of Tamiya Acrylics and Model Master Enamels for the scheme.

Markings are those for a P-6E, assigned to the 17th FS, 1st FG, based at Selfridge Field, MN during 1932. It was allegedly piloted Lt. H.L. Schlatter.

  1. My favorite Curtis Biplane scheme.
    Like this one a lot.

  2. Nice work, Frederick (@fjs3). These kits produce a really nice model of some of the classic early planes. I think I also have all of these kits, along with the Starfighter resin and PE, which really make these kits a pleasure to build. Well done. Looking forward to the rest.

  3. I always wished someone would do a 1/48 kit as well as this kit was done. Nice work and a great result Freddie @fjs3

  4. Beautiful work, a real eye catching build!

  5. I remember those kits fondly - they did several of the '30s biplanes and were fun builds - my memory might be failing, but I think they have raised lines on the spats to be able to paint in the talons? I used a Starfighter cockpit detail set for the Hobbycraft P-26 a while back (one of Starfighter's few 1/48 sets) and thought it was great. Nice work on this little guy - makes me want to build another!

    • Thank you, Paul!

I managed to score all three of these plus a P-36.
It does have those lines on the spats that I thought were a guide to decal placement.
It was a fun little build and Iā€™m looking forward to getting at the rest of them!

  6. That's a real beauty! I have a fondness for biplanes from the '30s, this is one of my favorites.

  7. Beautiful build! Lovely colors and excellent work on the rigging

  8. Amazing job on the classic Monogram Hawk, Frederick! Those initial release molds, the extras you obtained with proper research, all combined with your superb skills, resulted in this excellent Hawk.
    Congratulations!

  9. It looks great, Frederick, the colour scheme really suits it.

  10. Superb result, Frederick @fjs3
All looking great on this bi-plane, chosen scheme is really nice.

  11. Very nice and eye catching, Frederick. Well done.

  12. Everyone is now posting "Vintage" kits. I prefer to use the word "Classic" kit. A kit that was made in 1968 a year before the Apollo Moon landing, the Vietnam War and the Beatles were still going and yet this kit still holds water. In a time when kits can be printed. Which for some who live in the sticks would call Voodoo modeling.

Frederick J Seitz III (@fjs3), you really brought out the best in this kit and proven that this kit is a "Classic".
    Well done, well done indeed.

Clapping hands and whistling in the iModeler gallery.

  13. Came out really good. Those old Mono bipes were sweet.
Pretty close, this design, to making an aesthetically perfect aircraft.

  14. Great work,Frederick. Those Kits are still really nice and pretty accurate.

  15. Nicely done! I did the F4B alooong time ago.

  16. Beautifully done! I ended up with this kit in an Accurate Miniatures reboxing when our club inherited a deceased modeler's stash. I've really been wanting to get to it! Nice motivation here...
