Detailing Special Hobby Fairey Barracuda 1/48 kit

September 8, 2024 · in Aviation · · 16 · 230

Special Hobby's Barracuda is an injection short run kit that is a challenge to build. The kit attracted my attention following a complete scratch-built wing fold done on 's kit. The unique wing fold mechanism adds a lot of character to an otherwise rather dull looking aircraft. Ribs were fashioned from sheet plastic and fuel tanks are spares from 's kit. The most difficult part in the conversion was to anchor the wings to the fuselage given that the swept wing fold exerts pressure on the attachment points to the fuselage.

  1. You did a wonderful job on this challenging Barracuda, Rafi @blackmopane
The wing fold mechanism is quite unique and adds a lot to this build, well done.

  2. Now THAT is bloody well impressive, as they say. Fantastic scratchbuilding and figuring out how to make it work.
This is truly one of your best, Rafi.

  3. I have to agree this is one outstanding scratch work! No doubt it adds much more points to the kit itself, but all combines into one singular masterpiece. Thumbs up 👍🏻

  4. Awesome result from what looks like a lot of engineering and work.

  5. Incredible scratch building work on this one. A great looking model of one of the stranger, odd looking planes the British seem to be particularly good at designing.

  6. This is really superb, Rafi! Congratulations on building the wing fold mechanism!

  7. That’s truly impressive, Rafi. That’s a difficult build out of the box, let alone folding the wings with such a great result.

  8. Great project! The 'Cuda is such an odd-looking aircraft anyway (though I do love it!), and seeing it all folded up it is even more strange! Well done.
