1/350 Trumpeter USS Arlington + Ponto Photoetch set + LED

April 13, 2025 · in Ships · · 16 · 189

Hi everyone. Here is my build of USS 24, based off the USS in scale. A slight deviation from my typical WWII ships but I wanted to try the oil-canning paint technique and the ship presented large vertical surface to see if it really looks right. In the end, I think it turned out great with it being nice and subtle to naked eye but under light and camera, it really pops out. Just to make a simple build a bit more interesting, I added LEDs to it to mimic day-light operation and night operations, along with the AN/SPQ-9 antenna that rotates at 36rpm (not pictured because pictures are static...). The whole thing is controlled by a remote also not pictured. Additionally, I 3D printed and painted the Orion capsule that the USS Arlington exercised recovery operations for future SLS missions. All in all, pretty pleased with how new techniques and electronics worked out, and it took 2nd place at our local IPMS competition in its category. Hope you enjoy!

  1. Excellent result, John!

  2. Awesome build, John! Recovering of returning space capsules have changed a lot, or have they? Thats Freedom 7 manned by Alan Sherard being recovered by USS Noa DD847.

    • At least they dont have to lift it out of the water now! I’m fascinated by the fact that we can even have ships meet the crafts at sea cause they can calculate where it will splash down within a margin of error… Thank you!

  3. Sweet work on this. Love the details.

  4. The hull looks very convincing. Do you have a tutorial on how to do it?

    • Thank you! Studio Blue on Youtube did the USS New York and walked through how to do the oil canning effect. In essence, you use masking tape and spray along the edge, creating a hard edge that faded to soft. You do that along the length and height of the ship as pre-shading and then spray the main color over it. I think the trick is not to over do it or it’s going to look off.

  5. Excellent work, the details are very well done, the LED lights give a very special touch, congratulations!

  6. Looks great, lovely detail work
