Ford GT40 Mk 2, Meng, 1/24
In 1966, at their third attempt, Ford managed to beat their bitter revivals Ferrari to win the Le Mans 24 hour sports car race, a story that doesn't really need repeating here. However, the official results of the race are more the subject of this post.
After much wrangling and argy-bargy, the number 2 car, driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon were declared the winners.
Second place was taken by the number 1 car of Ken Miles and Denny Hulme.
And third by Ronnie Bucknum and Dick Hutcherson driving the Holman and Moody entered car number 5.
Ford decided to have a formation photo-finish of the three cars but were thwarted by the race rules.
Due to their starting place being furthest from the finish line it was decided that the number 2 car had the fastest average speed and had covered the most distance of the three cars.
Ken Miles had hoped to win giving him victory at the 24 hours of Daytona race, the 12 hours of Sebring, and Le Mans in the same year, an unequalled record. Tragically he perished in a testing accident shortly after the Le Mans race that year.
Meng give you the markings and subtle differences for all three cars, along with full engine details under the opening engine covers.
They are typical modern kits that have an exact fit of parts.
And the instructions should be strictly followed for a successful build.
If you care to delve into the WIP in the automotive group here you will find some pictures of the build.
OK, thanks for looking and commenting, and happy modelling.
Now look what you’ve done…..
I’m now searching for ‘Ford vs Ferrari’ so I can watch the movie for the 23rd time.
Beauty triple build of a beauty car, George.
Ha ha, don’t forget the popcorn, George @georgeswork. Thank you very much.
Nice looking group of cars, George !
Those have been my favorite race cars since got these two matchbox cars in the 60s , when I was much younger.

Thanks, Jay @ssgt, I think GT40s look good in any scale or colour scheme.
A beautiful collection of GT40's, George @chinesegeorge
Your cars as well as the movie are a pleasure to watch.
Thank you, @johnb, it’s a great movie.
Nice George! @chinesegeorge
My hope is someone comes out with a good MKIV.
Hi ,Robert @beausix, we can only live in hope, thanks for looking.
Excellent models, George! Love seeing all three together!
Thanks, Spiros @fiveten, much appreciated.
Nice work on these George. The GT-40 is one of my top 10 race cars. These look just right.
Thank you very much, Tom @tcinla, these and the Porsche 917s are my favourites.
One of my favorite race cars of all time and yours do the subject justice. I remember well building a GT40 model when I was a kid and accidentally smearing glue all over the rear suspension in my feeble attempt at assembly. One of my goals once I complete my never-ending Beaufighter project is to build a GT40 kit. Hopefully by next year...
Thanks, Greg @gwfabian, I’d certainly recommend the Meng kit if you finish your current project, although the Fujimi kit also builds up very nicely.
Those all look great, George! 👏 That racer is one of my favorites for sure, right up there with its great rivals, the Ferrari P3/P4, and yes, the Porsche 917s as well. 😉 That said, I also can't think of many that were as beautiful as the D-Type Jaguar! 😍
I agree, Gary @garybrantley, Jaguars are also favourites of mine, C-Type, D-Type, E-Type, there’s no end to them. Thanks for looking and commenting.
Killer trio! What’s the link to your GT40 WIP build, George @chinesegeorge?
Hi Eric @eb801, the WIP kind of fizzled out due to a lack of enthusiasm on my part and a clear coat/decal disaster on the 250 GTO that was part of the project. I’ll try to find the link for you, here it is .https://imodeler.com/groups/work-in-progress-automotive/forum/topic/ford-vs-ferrari-le-mans-1966/
Nice Fords, George (@chinesegeorge). You not only have one of my most favorite race cars, you have 3! Well done.
Thanks, George @gblair, glad you like them.
Great Results George, you realized 3 cars in a superb mode !
Great to hear from you, @tarantinopaolo, thank you for looking and commenting.
Well done, George, on one of the coolest looking cars produced.
Thanks, Gary @gwskat, I agree with you, they are definitely cool.
