RAF Vickers Wellington Mk IA 1939, Airfix 1/72

May 11, 2025 · in Aviation · · 15 · 282

Today's post features the Vickers . This kit, based on their latest tooling, beautifully captures the iconic presence of this historic aircraft. Many of you may have already built it, given its popularity.

With limited reference materials available in Japan, I relied on online photos to guide my build. Aside from adding some detail to the vertical stabilizer, I assembled it almost straight out of the box, including the decals. This was my first twin-engine aircraft, and the black underside for night bombing presented some challenges, but thanks to the kit's well-engineered design, I managed to bring it all together.

What I focused on most was the balance between the Dark Earth and Dark Green tones on the upper surfaces. After reviewing insights from experienced modelers online, I opted for Tamiya XF-81 for the Dark Green as-is, while the Dark Earth was a mix of Creos H72 with a touch of Tamiya XF-49. Interestingly, in photos, pure H72 seems to have a more striking presence on the model.

Despite a few mistakes along the way, I'm incredibly pleased with how this Wellington came together—it truly embodies the spirit of this legendary bomber.
