Return from the shelf of doom
My wife bought me the Academy 1/144 B-47 many years ago. A few mistakes, some poor decals and I boxed it up. It Moved to Seattle with me and sat for 12 more years. Oh I picked it up many times, as the B-47 is a favorite of mine, but the lack of good SAC decals stopped me. When Caracal came out with their 1/144 B-36 decals set, it looked like I could use some of them to finally build my Stratojet. I stripped off the old paint, built it gear up and built it as a "display" model, I think that works well for small scale jet bombers. The decals are close enough in size. I did use the Academy wing stripes, but they were tough to work with. Overall I'm pretty happy with it. A friend of mine bought a bunch of antique Revell stands and sent them to me and I used one of them to mount it on. I loved getting this done!
Very cool Rob. Thanks much for sharing.
Excellent! How nice to finally finish a "shelf of doom" project and come up with such excellent result!
Magnificent return, Rob!
That's excellent, no one would guess it is a shelf of doom subject. Also, I think the old Revell stands are the best. Don't understand why there aren't more companies out there selling stands like these.
How did you do the full paint stripping? It looks flawless.
Thank you! Atlantis makes these stands from the old Revell molds, I think you can buy them separately from their website. As for stripping paint, I had only gotten to the point of painting some day-glo bands on the aircraft, so I used wet and dry sandpaper, then just a touch of lacquer thinner on a q-tip for hard to get recesses. Finishing up with some of those "Mr Clean" white scrubby pads. I had used Mr Surfacer 1000 which sands down and feathers well as it dried very thin and hard
It's always satisfying to rescue a favorite from the 'shelf of doom'. And this one looks great. The B-47 has always been a favorite of mine since I saw a Steve Canyon episode many years ago in which he had to shoot one down that was headed for Russia after the crew died from loss of cabin pressure. I have one or two kits on my shelf that "I'll get back to someday." Very nice.
B-47 is one of the best looking cold war jets!
Great to see this built up Rob!
Nice work.
Thank you everyone for the kind words!
How wonderful that you finally finished this Stratojet, Rob @robertandy
Your wife must be happy as well to see her gift on the shelf after so many years.
A great result.
Nice return from the Shelf of Doom!
Love the iconic look of the Stratojet and this project displays it well. Nicely done!
This "long-term" project really came out well, Rob (@robertandy). Getting it built was worth the wait. I have thought about getting some stands from Atlantis several times. How did you get the B-47 logo onto the base?
Individual letters from Microscale sheets
Looks great!
That’s a sharp looking model, Rob!
Man, that is so cool, Rob @robertandy! 👍 What a beautiful little model, sir! 🤩
Thanks again everyone!
Nicely done Rob, looks great on the stand!
She's a beauty of a build, great save on this B-47!
