USS Hornet (CV-8)

May 3, 2025 · in Ships · 7 · 144

Tamiya 1/700 scale waterline series, and a major challenge it was. The deck didn’t go on exactly correct at the bow. Not one of their best kits. It was to look like it did with the Doolittle Raid on Japan with the 16 B-25 bombers, April 18, 1942. Makes the deck a bit crowded. Never again will I attempt something with the parts being so small. (Tweezers and toothpicks and Tamiya extra thin cement of course.) At least I didn’t lose any parts flying around off the sprues. No decals came with the kit except for the tiny stars for the bombers and some went on and some didn’t. Frankly, I skipped a couple of parts on purpose. I used my own deck white line ideas and made a cardboard template and used a white marker pen to draw them on. That rear mast was warped too right off the sprue. A flashlight came in handy too. You couldn’t really glue the aircraft on because they only had small points underneath to represent wheels. Required a certain amount of cussing. But they did include a black plastic waterline part to glue onto the bottom of the hull.

  1. Excellent Hornet, Emmet!

  2. Good job, Emmet! 1/700 is some tiny pieces, for sure.

  3. Clearly not an easy one but you did a wonderful job, Emmet @bmolloy

  4. Thanks and I managed to bend that rear mast straight now.

  5. This looks great. I am tempted to build a ship but when I read this I don’t think I have the skill or patience. I admire your effort.

    • Thanks, I have done more ships than aircraft in my time but only two or three with this many tiny parts. I am considering no more models, I turned 80 on March 30 and I just don’t have the dexterity and patience as I once did. I built my first models by Revell around the age of 11 and then probably stopped for many years when I went in the Navy in 1965. I really started again around 2009 and did the most from 2013 until now. And for that matter I am out of room for them.
