1/48 Ki-100
This is an original 1974 issue Otaki kit. Another $4 swap meet find that patiently waited 51 years to get built. Zero drama in assembly, accurate shapes, and sketchy details in the cockpit. I only added a set of Eduard seat belts as you really can't see that much in there due to the canopy framing and dark interior colors. The only changes I made to the model were to add a gun sight, open up the solid landing light on the port wing and make a clear cover from tape for it and remove some bogus panel lines in the cowling area. Current thinking is that the interiors of these planes were painted with the exterior camouflage color. Kawasaki green in this case. Paints were almost all Mr. Color lacquer and the decals are from Lifelike. These kits are still very viable and enjoyable to build since they don't contain 400+ parts. Happy modeling!
History proves that sometimes the best designs just happen, like when you run out of inline engines but have a bunch of airframes...so just slap on a radial engine and see what happens.
I agree with you '100'% on those Otaki kits, I'm letting mine age a little while longer and will probably go with the P-47 first.
Amazing work with this old gem of a kit, John. Impressive work.
Thanks, George. A friend of mine is starting an Otaki P-47.
Great job, this is a beauty of a build John! Many years ago I built their Ki-61 and that was a good kit, but their Ki-100 is a much nicer kit. In the past few years I have picked up a few of these old Otaki kits and hopefully get them built.
Thanks, Bob. They’re well worth building.
This came together very well. Excellent finish.
Thanks, Brian!
Super job on the finish John. Otaki is the only older kit that I haven't built yet
Thanks, George. Pick one up, they’re fun!
Otaki/Arii kits are all very nice , probably some of the best made in the era they came from. Yours turned out excellent … just the right amount of chipping and weathering .
Thanks, Jay!
That's a very neat build John. She certainly stands the test of time. Excellent.
Thanks, Guy!
An excellent result, John @j-healy
You clearly enjoyed this old Otaki kit.
Thanks, John! They’re always fun projects.
Awesome paintjob and chipping, John @j-healy.
Thanks, Felix!
Looks fantastic - well done!
Thanks, Greg!
Looks really great, John!
Thanks, Scott!
Very nice, John (@j-healy). Otaki kits still stand up well against the newer kits, especially the exterior. I bought a bunch of Otaki kits when they were new, and I still intend to build them. The paint and finish is very well done.
Thanks, George. I’ve built most of them over the last 50 years (gasp), and still have an N1K-1 George and a FW-190 in the stash. They will be built.
I'm with you. I have some kits in the stash I bought decades ago and that have been eclipsed since. Still going to build them. Nobody is going to buy them from me and I'm suspect of anyone who'll be able to tell the difference between them and the newer kit, in the final result.
Very nicely done and I appreciate the restrained weathering. Just the perfect amount for my taste.
Thanks, Bill! Yes sir, I never duplicate kits if I have a decent example in the stash. I sold a good amount of kits over a four year period when I retired and have a manageable inventory at this point. Selling is tough, buy wisely!
Great result! Those old Otaki/ Arii/ Nichimo kits can be made into fine models as you just demonstrated.
Thanks, Chas!
What a wonderful result, John!
Gotta love Otaki kits! i love them!
Thanks, Spiros!
Great looking build, John
Thanks, Gary!
Really nicely done John! I was not aware that Otaki had covered this aircraft. It is one of those rare builds that you can just keep looking at and find more to like about it. I think Otaki also did a very good job on their Bf 109 G and Spitfire Mk. VIII.
Thanks, Russell. Yes, the 109 and Spit are good kits. Only real issue with the Spit is the lack of gull shaping under the Spit fuselage/wing join area.
I love Japanese planes, I built a few of them once, also from Otaki. You really did a good job with this one.
Thanks, Milan!
Great build and great 4$ deal!
Thanks, Captain!
