1/72 Academy F-4J UK

June 1, 2025 · in Aviation · 20 · 174

Another in the series of Phantom Builds.
The Academy kit despite being a snap fit went together without any hassle.
My only issue was completely self inflicted as I dropped it not long after the canopy was glued down and I thought I'd gotten away with it but the pull handles on the front seat must have come loose.
Still it looks OK from a foot away.

Primed with Mr. Surfacer 1500 Black.
Tamiya Rubber Black.
Mr. Hobby Off-White
Painted with Revell 55 Enamel.
Colourcoats Dark Gull Grey and Light Aircraft Grey.
Mr. Super Metallic Dark Iron.
Xtreme Metals Steel, Titanium, Burnt Metal and Jet Exhaust.

The decals had a really bad reputation for curling and flipping over before getting anywhere near the model but I found that if the decal water was really hot and they were held in face down they went down fairly well.

Thanks for looking,

Cheers,
Alistair

  1. Nice work, Alistair. Those British F-4Js don’t get the love the Spey engined models did.

  2. A Phabulous Phantom, Alistair.
I was looking at that kit a month or so ago, amazing design how it goes together and looks very good.
Very nice work, great choice of finishes.

    • Thanks very much.
The kit goes together really well.
The only issue it gave me was fitting the canopy and that was probably down to paint causing fit problems.

  3. Excellent work Alistair! I love the paint scheme you painted on your Phantom and a great finish to it.

  4. Even up close it looks really good, Alistair @alistairfgauld
Very nice work, especially on this unique scheme.

  5. Well done, Alistair (@alistairfgauld). The color is especially interesting. I have always liked the British Phantoms, especially the FG and FGR.

  6. Great build Alistair! The paint scheme is striking.

  7. Another beauty, Alistair!
    Congratulations!

  8. Gorgeous paintjob! Love the scheme, Alistair @alistairfgauld.

  9. Nice work! A 'J' bird of a different color.

  10. Many thanks.

The strange colour came as in the US when they were being prepped they painted Flint Grey over Yellow Chromate Primer and gave it this weird colour.
