Aoshima ‘68 MGB

Here's another nice car model, the 1968 . I like these Aoshima car kits because they are pretty simple to build and yet still look good for a non-car modeler like me. I still can't quite get the super smooth shiny finish like the real car modelers get, but I am getting closer. I used Lotus British Racing Green for the exterior and the Manila Cream Leather box set for the interior. Tamiya paints were used for the other areas that were not chrome. To touch up and create the chrome areas that were not already chromed, I used a marker and for the side trim.

  1. Very nice classic British sports car, Scott, you even got the steering wheel on the correct side. The finish looks perfect, cars weren’t quite so shiny in those days.

  2. Pretty snazzy! I really like how the interior turned out. Not bad for a newby.

  3. Looks fantastic, Scott!

  4. Paint looks great to me.

  5. Nice model - paintwork and chrome work is excellent and a very nice result. Just don't take it out on the road.

The MGB was a nice looking car, but as I recall, you needed to own two - one to drive while the other was in the shop for major repair. I was once with a friend who owned one when the clutch assembly disassembled - on the LA freeway! Fortunately British car companies got bought by American car companies in the 80s, who patiently explained to them how the Industrial Revolution is supposed to work (the way Packard taught R-R how to make a Merlin engine with actually-interchangeable parts). Now Jaguars and such perform like everyone wants them to - I will never forget that 1987 Sterling I once owned. Lots of fun, lighter than the equivalent Acura- a real get up and go machine, but then I had to have it towed three times to the shop to reassemble the clutch, and it got tiresome (thank god for AAA and the 100-mile tow). That and the Lucas "electrical" system it was crippled with.

    • Lucas Electrics..."The Prince of Darkness". I know, I owned a 1969 Lotus Europa (the first imported into the States) and a 1969 MGC-GT. Then there were Girling brakes...a whole other story.

    • Thanks Tom. I will not take it out on the road. My brother has a ‘56 MGB and, even though I’ve gone around his neighborhood with him in it, it’s a death trap. You have to pull a wire to open the door for crying out loud. And that’s the way it was designed! However, it looks damn cool!

  6. Very impressive build, Scott @guitarhack5
The paintwork and the chrome parts do look fantastic.

  7. You can't convince me you are not a car modeler. Interior and exterior paint job look really nice...a nice eye catcher.
    Well done, Scott!

  8. Scott, It's a lovely Mig. My first one was a '67 BRG with black interior and the luggage rack on the boot. The steering wheel was on the right as well which is the wrong side for New England. I had very little trouble except for the Prince of Darkness rearing his head every so often.
    Very nice job!
    Dave

  9. Was the windscreen frame painted black for the US market? I've owned an MGB for 13 years and the windscreen frame was aluminium. Mine was also painted in BRG. Great model, congrats!

    • Mark, I didn’t even think to look at photos to see if it was black or aluminum. I just followed the paint guide, which said black. Thanks for the kind words.

  10. I agree with all the previous comments -- great build, great paint job!

Like you, Scott, I'm not much of a car guy, but the MGB is close to my hart. My dad own "real" sports cars all through the 50's and 60's. He had, in succession, two Porsche roadsters and then an MGB, the last could have been a '65. All were "Americanized" with left-hand drive. I don't recall any of these cars being a maintenance problem, although I was pretty young. The Jaguar XKE that followed, on the other hand, was a "hangar queen".

    • I loved the joke in "Mad Men" that the guy had to hang himself in his office because he couldn't get his XK-E to start so he could gas himself.

      • When I was a teen, there was a beautiful brand new mid 60’s XKE that lived in our neighborhood. It spent an awful lot of time parked at the bottom of our street waiting for the tow truck.

  11. The interior is fantastic! @guitarhack5

  12. Slick work, Scott!

  13. Nicely done, love the paint .

  14. Beautiful assembly and finish. And I love the British racing green. I really wanted to buy the last of the type in 1981, but something a little more practical won out.

    • Thank you Russell! I do love me some British Racing Green too. I’ve thought about getting some kind os British sports car (I actually prefer the look of the Triumph Spitfire) but, I have not room in the garage to keep it out of the California sun!

  15. Nice model, great interior treatment. I had a 1965 MG "Midget", one step away from a clown car. I never understood the joke about British drinking warm beer from Lucas refrigerators. After two years driving my Midget, with Lucas electrical wiring, I finally understand the joke!

  16. Killer looking MG, especially the interior. You nailed the leather seats, Mike. Aoshima curbside cars rock!

  17. Spectacular build, love the finish. I wish my airplanes looked that good!

  18. You kicked butt on this build, it looks great! I love it...
