Lancaster Mk.1

June 2, 2025 · in Aviation · · 8 · 248

I wanted to share a few photos of my recently completed 1/48th scale Mk.1. This is a beautiful model with great fits accurate shapes. The model contains a fully detailed interior but unless I did some sort of cutaway, the detail was going to remain completely invisible. So, I only detailed and installed the cockpit area. The turrets; however, are quite detailed and were very visible, so I did detail them per the kit assembly instructions. They were mini models in themselves.

My current finish would not accurately represent an operational Lancaster because one in service would be quite weather worn. I do plan to go back and do some weathering, but I'm concerned the exhaust staining is beyond my skills, so I'm not sure if I am going to try adding those.

The black lower surfaces were painted using a Tamiya rattle can. The shade is NATO black which I thought gave the black surfaces a more realistic (scale) look. The upper camouflage colors were painted using Mission Models acrylics. These are my favorite acrylics, but I have learned that to get them to spray without clogging, the airbrush must be thoroughly cleaned and flushed beforehand. I flush with distilled water just before loading the paint. Since doing this, my clogging issues have disappeared. I use the Mission Model prescribed mixing ratios with their thinner and Polyurethane additive.

Be forewarned, this aircraft takes up a lot of shelf space after assembly.

Thanks for taking a look.

I'm sure that with your skills you will be able to create perfect exhaust stains. But I would first try it on an old model before applying them on this one.
