McKnight's Mark: 1/48th Italeri Hurricane Mk.I
Over the years I have learned to steer clear of Italeri's 1/48th aircraft, as typically there are multiple problems with the kits. However, when I came across this Hurricane at a model show and looked inside the box I was pleasantly surprised by the surface detail and options for open engine and cockpit panels. Since the kit was selling for 1/2 price, I figured I couldn't go wrong at $20 and opted in.
I had wanted to build William McKnight's Hurricane for some time and had purchased some third-party decals a few years back, before several of the kit makers decided that McKnight's aircraft would be featured front and centre. (There's the model makers luck cutting in.)
While the kit isn't quite up to Hasegawa's fit standard, it does have features not included in those offerings. (Oddly Tamiya re-released this same Italeri kit... no kidding.) In the end, you can get a great looking display right from the box with only a few areas that will take some extra effort.
You can see more in-depth detail of this build with additional photos at: https://www.flypastrush.com/post/mcknight-s-mark-1-48th-italeri-hurricane-mk-i
Thanks for looking & good luck on your next build.
Looks great! I think you did absolutely the right thing by leaving engine covers off. That's where I had issues. I couldn't get them to fit quite right.
Yes Chris, Italeri isn't quite up to making parts good enough so that they to mesh perfectly - Cheers
Excellent Hurricane!
Nice addition to the collection, although I had a few Hurries the open engine on this one is a standout - Thank again Spiros
Superb result on McKnight's Hurricane, @flypastrush
Very nice information about William on your site as well, thanks for sharing.
Thanks John (@johnb) Glad you enjoyed the article. Man they were young to have so much responsibility.. not to mention risk!
Those two figures along with the engine covers removed make a perfect vignette. That’s quite the lineup of RAF birds bordering the hanger walls in the background.
I’m hoping Arma Hobby will come to the rescue and issue a Mk.I in this scale as their Mk II in 1/48 is outstanding and the only way to go.
Thanks Eric (@eb801) I have a few figures from various Monogram kits and some from ICM as well. It certainly helps set the stage for the display. They show up occasionally on my Weblogs. 🙂 Arma is doing a great job with their kits alright - Cheers
Nice job!
Thanks Gary
Really nice paintjob and great looking chipping! All the open parts really look cool. So does the artwork on the plane.
Thanks Felix, As I understand it McKnight wanted to be a doctor after the war (which was part of the inspiration for the skeleton artwork). The open panels do add some interest and you could keep going adding in extra details to the engine area.
Nice work @flypastrush !
Thanks David (@davem) Another Hurricane for the collection but this time a bit different with the open panels
A lovely Hurricane! Well done.
These WWII fighters are a breeze compared to some of the complex jets so it is nice to get them into the mix once in a while. - Thanks Greg
Tamiya has released many Italeri-kits, both AFV's and aircraft.
Interesting, first time I recall seeing that in a 1/48th scale aircraft - Thanks for the info Michiel
Superb work!
Thanks Chas - Another aircraft for the Battle of Britain series
