Throwback Build – 1/48 MH-53E Sea Dragon “Black Stallions” (2022)
This article is part of a series:
Every time I look at it, I'm reminded why I keep coming back to this beast of a helicopter.
The silhouette, the surface details, and the way light plays across the weathered panels—it still pulls me in.
Here are a few notes from the build:
- The rivet and bolt details were upgraded with aftermarket parts, individually applied to bring out the panel texture.
- The greasy, oily streaks and semi-gloss spots on the surface were all painted on, not decals.
- Some subtle dents were sanded and highlighted with shading and paint layering to simulate field wear.
Built in 2022, this model has been sitting on my mini hangar shelf, and I still enjoy revisiting it again and again.
Cool, looks like the real thing in the first shot especially. Love the weathering.
Well done and really weathered
Great looking build Alex (@superdad1688) Attention to detail in the finish wins the day 🙂 What scale and kit is this?

It's been quite a while.
Excellent result, Alex!
That is a stand-out build! Love it.
This is absolutely stunning, Alex @superdad1688
Painting and weathering is ultra realistic.
Outstanding work! I have 1500 hours flying those and that looks like it is ready for startup and launch! Beautiful build!
I'm so glad to hear that you got some in-person feedback in your role!
Impressive build Alex! I once took a ride in one to catch an aircraft carrier.
We admire your experience.
