Airfix 1/48 Bf-109E-3
I wanted to build one more model for the Phony War Group (thanks for a great group, Felix @fxrob). The problem was that I found several paint schemes that I liked and I couldn't decide which one to do. So I decided to do 3 models, 2 in 1/48 and 1 in 1/32. In reality all 3 are not quite in the Phony War period, but close enough, I think. They also illustrate the evolution of early war camouflage. I decided I wanted to build all three straight from the box, and experiment with a different brand of paint on each model.
Here is the info on this second model:
Kit: Airfix 1/48 Bf-109E-3/E-4
Decals: Aeromaster - Battle of Britain Final Throes II
Markings: Bf-109E-3 8./JG27, Winter 1940
Paint: Various Tamiya paints mixed to obtain required colors, thinned with X-20A. Tamiya Clear Gloss prior to decals. Decals sealed with Winsor and Newton Galeria Flat thinned with X-20A (Thanks for suggesting this, George @blackadder57). It is amazing stuff.
Enjoyed following along and glad you like the W&N
Thanks again, George (@blackadder57). I am looking forward to trying the W/N on the 1/32 109.
This scheme has been one of my favorites for a long time! Nice work!
Hi, Jeff (@jeff-carle). I remember building the old Monogram 109 when it first came out all those decades ago. It was in this paint scheme. Ever since then, this is the scheme that 109s are supposed to be in.
George (@gblair),
I always enjoy your build blogs; "The World of Georges Modeling Adventures." their down to earth follow some "Objective thinking",mixed with a little fun. This build follows those principles to a T. Juggling three builds and coming up with three variations on one theme sweetens the pot too.
Thanks, Stephen (@stephen-w-towle). It is always fun have you following the build because you have great suggestions and comments. I don't normally build more than 1 model at a time, but I already had the paints, so why not? Cheers, buddy.
That is a nice paint job, George @gblair. And yes, that is the scheme my Monogram 109 is wearing, as it should be! ๐
Thanks, Robert (@robgenev665). I wonder how many of us think this is the "normal" paint scheme for Bf-109s because of that Monogram kit?
I was brought up on Airfix kits, so itโs always good to see one built as nice as this one, George. I see that itโs not just F1 modellers who have to buy after market decals.
Thanks, George (@chinesegeorge). I have a bunch of decals that I have gathered over several decades, and now that I am finally using them, I always worry about how they will perform. These worked well, but the ones on the 2nd 109 didn't work quite as well.
Excellent nob and ditto result, George! An absolute joy to follow tour build thread! Congratulations!
Thanks, Spiros (@fiveten). I appreciate you following along on the build with your consistent encouragement and suggestions.
Another beauty, George @gblair
The white nose draws the attention a lot because usually those Emils are having a yellow nose.
A very nice scheme and beautiful build.
Thanks, John (@johnb). You normally see 109s with a yellow nose, so a white nose version really caught my eye. Thanks for following along on the build.
Another great 109 build! This one looks really nice too. ๐
Thanks, Bob (@v1pro). I don't normally build more than one model at a time, so it was fun doing both models at the same time.
Hans now has his ride and it is a very nice one.
Well done, George! This one looks as fine as the other.
Thanks, Gary (@gwskat). Hans was hidden under the tape covering the cockpit during painting, so I am glad to finally see him again.
Another very nice early scheme 109, George.
Great work on the camo scheme.
I'll need to check the blog on what mixture ratio you use for the white nose.
I'm finishing up a 1/72 Airfix von Werra 109 and my white is a bit too blue, but I think I'm gonna leave mine as is.
Thanks, George (@georgeswork). The downside to Tamiya paint is that you have to mix most of the Luftwaffe colors, but I sure like the way they spray. I used Tamiya Flat White thinned with X-20A for the nose.
Very nice build, George @gblair. I like both schemes a lot and the weathering is great. Thank you very much for participating in the group!
Thanks, Felix (@fxrob), and thanks for coming up with the idea for a great group. I never build more than one plane at a time, but I got excited about the group and couldn't stop myself from doing more than one.
Really nice build!
Thanks, Jim (@jimh). It was fun doing two 109s at the same time and comparing the two kits as I went.
Great build George and another great Phoney War entry ๐
Thanks, Guy (@thom). I have done very few 109s, but these were fun. Also fun to compare the kits as I built them.
One of the reasons you see so many Bf109 builds is due to the wide variety of great paint schemes... too many options to just have one kit build - Nice job with yours George (@gblair)
Thanks, (@flypastrush). I intended to build only one 109, but couldn't decide on the paint scheme, so ended up with 3. Two down, only one more to go (for now).
There's just something about those baby-blue 109s that draws me in! The white nose (as opposed to yellow) really puts the candle on the cake. Another beautiful build.
Thanks, Greg (@gkittinger). Ever since I build that Monogram 109 many years ago, I have always thought this is how they are supposed to look.
A really nice pair of early Emils, both look great.
Thanks for the kind words, Chas (@chasbunch).
Gโday George (@gblair),
This is a great companion to your other 109 with the contrast between the two schemes.
Even the 7 on the nose rather than the usual place behind the cockpit adds interest.
Your weathering looks great, too.
Liked!
Thanks, Michael (@michaelt), and also thanks for following the build with your usual great suggestions and support. One of the reasons I chose this paint scheme was because of the white nose and the black 7.
