Hobby Boss 1/48th A-10C

July 13, 2025 · in Aviation · · 10 · 209

I want to share my most recent project. This is the Hobby Boss, 1/48th scale A-10C. The only aftermarket additions to this build were an Eduard instrument panel and an ejection seat from Metallic details. The seat is 3D printed and amazingly detailed, although I ruined the canopy breaker horns removing them from the printing hub (extremely delicate). I made alternatives from carved plastic sprue.

The kit has excellent fits and except for the too shallow engine intakes (a common flaw for other A-10 kits) looks accurate in shape and dimensions (at least to my eyes).

I tried to replicate the subtle shade variation of the two-tone gray camouflage scheme. I wanted a well worn squadron jet as opposed to a commemorative demonstrator scheme (and there are some amazing ones included with the kit). I used Mission Model acrylics over an overall NATO black lacquer primer applied from a Tamiya rattle can. I love Tamiya's rattle cans for priming. They are virtually fool proof with no running, they are quick drying, and the paint shrinks as it dries making the model surface super smooth. By varying the depth of the overlying acrylics, applied with my trusty Iwata airbrush, I was able to create a "lively" gray camouflage that doesn't look uniform or toy-like. Well, that was what I was going for anyway.

  8. Fantastic! I built an old Monogram A-10A in 1/48 and remember being surprised by how large it was.
