Revell 1:48 F-89 Scorpion

October 6, 2025 · in Aviation · · 21 · 315

This is a project that has been waiting for my skills to catch up with this end result. A great friend of mine's father was the crew chief of this Wisconsin Air National Guard F-89D way back in the day (1960s?). I was unable to really get it schemed up as there were no markings for it. With my acquisition of a Cricut machine and actually learning how to use it, more or less, I downloaded the correct Air Force fonts and was able to paint the white Wisconsin Ang markings, numbers and the diamonds on the tail. Also painted the USAF markings as well. Was pretty happy I was able to finish it for him. Kept it clean as I would think ANG guys would super maintain!

  2. Super job on this Chris, I'm sure it's going to be well liked.

  3. Not one I’m familiar with, but I like it. Nice job Chris.

  4. Great looking Scorpion ! It’s always nice to see an Air Guard aircraft modeled.

  5. Very cool build, Chris @champagnecrc. I really have to look into those Cricuts.

  6. Beautiful result, Chris @champagnecrc
    Great work with the CriCutter.
Your dad's friend must be really happy with the result.

  7. Nice work, Chris! I love ANG planes.

  8. Excellent Scorpion, Chris!

  9. Ahoy Chris. Your Scorpion is excellent and I applaud your building skill. And I especially applaud you for figuring out how to make the Cricut work. I bought a used one a while back for the same purpose as yours and so far, the trick of making it work eludes me. I'm originally from Montana and the Montana Air National Guard also flew F-89's in the early '60s, one sits on display at the entrance of their facility in Great Falls, Montana. Some airplanes are beautiful, I give you the Mirage III as an example, and others are not. The F-89 is not. Good grief what an awful looking airplane. The F-86 and the F-80 are both classic beauties from the same era so that's not an excuse. Northrop sure missed the boat with this one.

    • Thxs. I would agree with you on the looks. A lot like the cf-100 Canuk. But I suppose it was designed with purposefulness in mind. Fit those avionics in there cause it's not a dogfighter!

  10. Excellent build, did it go together ok? I love an old Monogram/Revell 48th.

  11. Nice work Chris. I lived in Madison WI for a while in the late 1980’s and worked on Truax Field. Our neighbors were the Air National Guard, who flew A-10’s at the time. There were old timers still in the Guard who worked on the F-89. At one point a Scorpion crashed into Lake Mendota on approach and still sits there to this day. Your model is a fine tribute to the crew who perished in that mishap.

  12. Well, Chris, I am going to totally agree with everyone else that that is a beautiful build of a wonderful old kit. And the reason for the build is excellent. I can’t imagine anybody not being thrilled to be gifted such a wonderful thing.

But, I am going to totally disagree with you and Mr. Shema. I think the F-89 is a beautiful airplane. And what plane could be more aptly named than this plane as the Scorpion. Look at the sit. And it looks lethal but not brutish like many of the Soviet designs. It looks like it will do the job. Not a lot more should ever be asked of a war plane. It is true, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.Good modeling and a hardy congratulations to you, my friend.

  13. Thxs for the kind words. You are definitely right about the appropriate naming of this bird! Very scorpion like. And i agree that you're right as well in that it is beautiful for its time and to what it was set out to accomplish. Just like the Douglas Skynight, designed to purpose. But its no Dassault Rafale! (My fav!)

  14. That model looks great, Chris! 👏 The clean look definitely fits her. 👍 I've had that kit in my stash for over 20 years and your beauty is an inspiration! Thanks for showing her here!
