1/48 A6M3 Type 22 Zero.

November 2, 2025 · in Aviation · · 37 · 268

It looks like many of us are building Zeroes this week! Here’s my latest. This is the Hasegawa kit built with a combination of kit and Lifelike decals to render a field camouflaged example of the 582nd Kokutai at Buin in 1943. Paints are Mr. Color Mitsubishi green over Tamiya IJN gray/green. The only thing I added was a set of Eduard seatbelts . I closed the canopy on this one to show the lines of the Type 22 off. It’s the best looking variant in my opinion . I’m almost done with Zeroes for a bit. I have a Rufe ready for paint up next and that will do it for awhile.

  1. Double Zeros today, very nice work on the field applied camo, John.
I went back to see your zero from Sept, equally impressive.

  2. Nice Zero, 👏 bravo John!

  3. Excellent Zero, John!

  4. The paintwork is superb, @j-healy.

  5. Nicely done, i like undercolor apearances, just like it should be. Great work. And , yes, there are something in the air, considering Zero's models .

  6. G’day John (@j-healy),
I was just saying that the Model 22 is the best looking Zero. You have done a beautiful job on the paint scheme.
    Liked!

  7. A perfect looking Zero John, you have done a great job on the shading and wear.

  8. Very nice. These field applied schemes are tough to do. Most I have seen look like a beginner went wild with a brush. Your Zero's finish is really subtle and looks very real. Great job.

  9. That's a fine looking Zero, John @j-healy
You can never have enough of them, especially when they are looking this great.

  10. That’s a great looking model !

  11. John @j-healy, you have taken the time to study field applications. The slight overspray on the Hinomaru, the lighter application of green paint on the walkways, and the absence of paint on the control surfaces really stand out. There is looking, and then there is seeing a subject. Well done, well done indeed, John.

    • Thanks, Stephen. The one thing that puzzled me on this one is the fact that they overpainted the rudder, requiring rebalancing, but didn’t bother with the horizontal control surfaces. Anyways, it was an interesting scheme.

  12. Love the paintwork on this one, John! Well done.

  13. Very nice. Did you apply actual scratches to the wings near the roots?

  14. Nicely built painted and weathered. Zeroes are all nice lookin' but I like the 52's with the cannons sticking out.

  15. Very cool result. Looks like it belongs on a jungle airstrip!

  16. Very nice John, love the subtle weathering.

  17. Beautifully finished surface. Good job.
