Next month's club meeting theme is "Monogram Night." In my stash I have a "bagged" Monogram 1/48 Hawker Hurricane that I've been wanting to build for a long time. For this build, I will keep the wings the same as a Mk. IIA, which is how this kit is molded. To make it into a MK.IIB, C, D or the Mk.IV some work needs to get done on the wings to make it more correct if I want to be picky about the build.

There are no cockpit and wheel wells details in this kit so I will do some scratch building to improve on these areas.

I ordered clear vacuform canopy replacements, resin 4 spoke wheel set to replace the early 5 spoke versions which belongs on the very early Hurricanes MK.I, a 3D decal set for the cockpit and decals for the outside markings/insignia. I will use the markings for a Mk.IIA, gray/green paint scheme, NN-U s/n Z2579 that flew in No. 310 (Czechoslovak) Squadron RAF.

That looks like a fun project. The shapes on that kit always looked pretty good to me. Looking forward to seeing what magic you work on it!

I first started to work on the wings, the outboard wing sections dihedral are too flat on this kit. I sanded to thin the wing down a little and glued on styrene strips to strengthen the wings. Plus try to maintain a bend to hold the outboard wing sections in the proper dihedral position.

I also started to work on scratch building the wheel wells. The opening for the wheel well needed to be opened up a bit, this was done by sanding and cutting off the narrow center section. From there, I lightly sanded the area to smooth things out.

I am using a Hasegawa 1/48 Hurricane Mk.IIC as a reference for my wheel well and cockpit scratch building.

I am really looking forward to this build, Bob (@v1pro). I like to build old Monogram and Revell kits, and I have a couple the Monogram Hurricanes to do the same thing you are doing. They are still a ways down the build queue, so I plan to vicariously enjoy watching yours come together.

That's a very nice start already, Bob @v1pro
Those improvements will definitely improve the final looks.
With "bagged", do you mean that this kit was provided without the cardboard box.

Thank you George @gblair, John @johnb and Spiros @fiveten. I've been wanting to build this Hurricane kit for a while now. And John, when I bought this kit it did not come inside a cardboard box. The seller sold it within a plastic bag.

Hi Bob (@v1pro): I bought several "bagged" kits over the past years, mainly because it was an inexpensive way to get kits. There is a down-side, however. When we moved 3 years ago, I had to find boxes for the kits so they could be moved without damage.

I have quite a few that are in plastic bags, I keep mine in a box with other kits in bags, including some old "bagged" Frog and Airfix kits. And yes, they were very good deals when I bought them.

Bob (@v1pro): I am sure you remember when they would package some of the smaller kits in those clear blister packs. I had several in a box for my last move and the glue holding the clear pack to the cardboard backing let go, so I had parts from 3 or 4 kits rattling around loose in the box. Not sure if I found everything.

Loved those bagged kits back in the 70s, my friends @gblair, @v1pro and @johnb!

You’re off to an impressive start, Bob @v1pro !
I built a couple of those back in the 1970s when I was a kid.

Thanks Jay @ssgt, I am looking forward to this build. This is one Monogram kit I did not make back then from the ones released in the 60's. After this weekend I will post more of the build.
