G’day Eric (@eb801),
I don’t have a definative answer on the ID lights.
We know some aircraft had them from photos, but few pictures show that area.
Some aircraft didn’t have them, again from photos.
There are unsubstantiated assertions that they were introduced in late 1943 - possibly coinciding with the bubble top which appeared in September 43.
But, because production couldn’t keep up, many car-door typhoons were converted to have both the bubble top and rockets using kits.
I have seen at least one reference to a former car-door aircraft also receiving the larger tail and 4-blade prop.
So, my theory is now this;
Late production aircraft (from JP8xx at least) had the ID lights.
Sime earlier aircraft were converted to later configurations, but without the ID lights, and would have kept their original s/n.
The RAF Museum aircraft is known to have ‘lost’ a number of parts, including an aileron, engine panels, spinner and radiator, so who knows if the starboard ID was lost or damaged too.
So, until someone can tell me otherwise, mine will have the two ID lights.
Of course, once done someone will show me a verified period photo of my aircraft and it will have pink and purple spots. (And no ID lights.) 😊
