Category? What's the significance of this choice?

When posting a new article, or editing an existing article, one has a "category" choice available. What is the significance of this choice? Does it determine where the article displays, or what really? Thanks for the help!

If you're adding a new article (a build) on/in the "Headlines" forum, you will see the 'category' option. It merely allows you to add to the title of your article. The new article will appear in/on "Headlines" regardless of the category chosen.
The "Groups" forum(s) does not display a category option. One assumes that if you wish to discuss boats, for example, you would publish your question in the "Armada" group forum. Hope this helps.

All new articles appear at the Headlines page.

The category field is our means to get the articles organized by subject area, so that we eventually may allow readers to track not only ALL headlines, but also articles by category (for example, Armor). The basic functionality is already in place : for example, you can surf to http://imodeler.com/category/armor/ to view Armor articles only. However, the presentation is not fully developed yet, and we will probably be refining our choice of categories, creating menus for fast navigation etc. based on the input gathered form the first weeks of operation.

Tags will have the similar functions to categories, but with free choice of keywords and therefore more granularity. These need further development to be really useful, so I won' t be getting into detail here.

    Hope this helps,
    /Martin

Martin, I had posted an article(the J7W3 article) under "What Ifs" that of course appeared there, but I never saw it represented in Headlines. Did I do something wrong that caused that?
    Thanks, Gary

The only articles that appear under the "Headlines" forum are, of course, the one(s) you post there. Anything posted under a different heading, like "what-if's", for instance, appear in that forum only. You did nothing "wrong", per se.
The articles posted in Headlines are eligible for the monthly contest - all others are not. They are for general viewing and discussion. Hope this helps.

Yes, it does help Craig. I have been posting my articles after going to "My Stuff" and then 'add new article'. I note that these appear in Headlines too. Is it possible to have an article in both "What if" and headlines? Or, move an article from "What if" to Headlines?

It is possible to have your topic appear in multiple posts, but you'd have to post them separately in each forum. Personally, I don't see the point in doing so, but it IS an option.

"My Stuff" is just an overview of your activity in regard to your builds you've posted.

I've actually considered moving, as you say, articles I posted under the Headlines forum that were "walk-arounds". I'd posted them prior to having a forum dedicated to specifically 'walk-arounds', but I've yet to attempt to do so.

The site administrator may have an answer to that [article re-location] dilemma.

    @garybrantley,

iModeler is quite different from a "classic" discussion forum, so the concepts may take a moment to understand.

The first concept is that this is a crowd sourced site. We follow a general principle "If you can see it, you can contribute to it."

There are three main parts of the site where you can post stuff.

Headlines - anything you would like the entire world to see. Typically your finished models, your work in progress, kit review you make, walkaround of a favorite aircraft etc. Headline articles offer great photo support an exposure at the front page, meaning being shown to everyone visiting the site. Headline articles are being routinely reviewed by the editor to avoid any mishaps, and also participate in our monthly contest.

Activity - this is the log of everything happening at the site. Most users will simply be checking it as a "what's new" page, but you can also add short text messages or chat with your friends.

Groups - these are special interest groups where you can debate any questions in a narrower setting. Groups are usually started by members for other members around a certain subject. Groups offer great facilities for general discussion (including, for example, daily email digests etc.) but provide only simplified photo support and of course, your messages will only be reaching a more targeted audience.

My stuff - this tab simply groups together everything that you have posted across the site. Efficiently it doubles as your personal blog and yes, you can also add articles directly from there.

    Hope this helps

So, can i move an article from What if to the Headlines for instance?

Also, "My stuff – this tab simply groups together everything that you have posted across the site. " I have one article that I've posted in What If that doesn't appear in My Stuff. Is there a reason why that's happened? Please excuse all these questions; I am just trying to learn my way around this very enjoyable site! Thanks for all the help thus far!

Sorry, correction. My stuff groups also TOPICS you initiate across the groups, not your replies to other people's topics. For example, if you look under My Stuff --> Topics, you will see (among others) this topic.

Unfortunately, there is no "magic button" to convert a group post to a headline article. Copy/paste is the only possibility to do it.

Thanks for the kind words and let me know about any further questions.
