The end result is utterly rewarding, though!

The wings are painted now, although they are darker than I intended.
Looking at photos, however, it seems that some aircraft were darker than often portrayed.
The under-surfaces are painted light blue (RLM 65, actually) and the tailplane has been attached.

Several years ago I built the ancient Revell 1/28 scale kit and back dated it to be one of the prototype F-100 series Fokker machines. This is how I went about achieving the Fokker streaking that was so evident on these Dr-1 types (and the early Fokker D-VII aircraft as well).

I know it is a little too late for your model, but hopefully it might be helpful to someone.

A bit more painting today.
I tried re-masking and painting some of the axial wing to see if I could lighten the wings up a bit, but it made negligible difference, so I didn't try it on the wings.
The tail is painted yellow as you can see. I was aiming for a thin paint look and the pattern underneath is more visible than the photos suggest.
The wings, rudder and engine/cowling are not attached yet - I want to weather the wings a bit before I do that.

Lovely work, Michael. I like the green colour scheme and the 'streaked' application looks great; the contrast with the darker shade of red cowling is very eyecatching. Good work... :-).
