About this Group
The German Air Service, and later, when it was reformed under the guise of civilian training aircraft, and fast mail planes, to become the Luftwaffe of World War Two, was one of the worlds most formidable and technically advanced Air Services of the time. During this time, they led the world with technological advances, that would someday be used for peaceful purposes.
Without some of these technological advances, such as a single engine fighter with a fully functional forward firing machine gun, (that did not rely on wedges to deflect the bullets as they struck the propeller), to the first ever rocket powered fighter, (the Me-163), and the first jet powered aircraft to see service with a swept wing, (the Me-262), wire guided air launched missiles, (Fritz X and others) parasite aircraft such as the "Mistel" types, (that eventually blossomed to the modern day Space Shuttle and how it was returned on top of a 747 Jumbo Jet)... we would likely not be as far advanced in General Aviation as we are today.
This group build will also include anything that is used by the modern day Luftwaffe, which was founded in 1956, and is a part of NATO.
The Luftwaffe also had a ground service, which operated towed Flak guns, and other armored vehicles.
The group is open to anyone, and all Aircraft, Armor, Artillery, and Vehicle subjects are allowed.
It will start today, on May 1st, 2021, and run for approximately one year from now.

Any scale model may be built.
-
It is not necessary to be an entirely new build. As long as your model is not yet completed, it can be posted here. This was done to help clear off that “shelf of doom” we all seem to have. However, previously built models that are fully completed, can not be entered.
-
As long as it was an item or piece of equipment the German Air Service / Luftwaffe used, then it can be built.
-
Captured Allied equipment may be modeled. On the other side of the coin, Germany provided aircraft to other nations. So if you have a Bf-109, Ju-87, or FW-190, and you want to build it with Italian markings, or Spanish markings, or even build it as a captured bird, wearing American or British or Russian markings... that's OK. It started out as a German aircraft, so it is eligible for the group build.
During WW2, Nazi Germany also sent examples of various aircraft and blue prints to the Japanese for evaluation. If you want to build something that falls into this category that will work too. As long as the item you are building was operated by, or somehow used by the Germans during this era that’s fine. You can build it and it can be represented here. So if you want to build a Circus Rosarius, and have Spitfires, B-17's, P-51's, P-47's, what have you... as long as it was actually done and wore German markings, you can build it.
-
Members should open new thread for each of their builds for easier tracking of the progress of the builds.
-
Any level of aftermarket items (or none for that matter) can be used. Actual markings must be used. No “What if’s” are allowed. However, Luft 46 subjects are permitted. Sounds a bit odd... if you have any questions, please send the admin a PM and we will quickly let you know if the model you want to build is permissible or not.
-
You can post your model in the headlines section as soon as it is completed. There is no need to wait until the final reveal date to post your work. Please include the tag “Imperial German Air service, / Luftwaffe” at the bottom when you post your article. This will allow us to more easily locate and include it when the final reveal is posted. If your model was inadvertently missed in the final posting, please contact me and I will edit the final reveal to include your work.
-
I will most likely have to ask a few of you to assist me with the tasks of running the group. If you are interested in helping out, please send me a message and I will respond back to you as quickly as I can.

In today’s current atmosphere of the Covid-19, this might help you to cope with the “new normal” which unfortunately is staying home.
Let’s have some fun with this and go build something !
This group build will start on May 1st, to commemorate the start of the Imperial German Air Service on this very day back in 1910.
It will last for roughly one year, and depending on the reception it has, it could be extended even longer if necessary.

John, thank you, too... much appreciated. I got another coat of green onto the uppersurfaces earlier today, so giving that time to dry properly before doing the next stage.
-
Carl, thanks for your comment. It is certainly a large kit, but having built the Revell 1/32 scaleversion some time back, it is considerably less awkward to manoeuvre... :-).
-
A wonderful subject, Paul @paulh Already some great steps done. Thanks for sharing that valuable information.
-
Cool build. It sounds as if you know a fair amount about the HE-111. Big beasty in 1/48 scale!
-
Thanks, Spiros... the build is coming along well so far. Hopefully a bit more progress over the next few days... ;-).
-
Fantastic entry and ditto progress, my friend @paulh! Looking forward to your next steps!
-
Hi, folks... yes, a wee while since I've posted something here but I've managed to remember to take some actual photos during this build, which I can show you now... ;-). So, as many of you will probably […]

Finished and at the headlines Focke-Wulf FW190A8, Airfix (A01020A) 1/72

@clipper, thank you, Carl. Indeed, a scary moment to drill through the canopy. I tried to apply as less force as possible. In the end it all went quite smoothly.
-
Looks great John (@johnb). I am sure there was some nervousness when drilling the hole, but by starting with a punch mark and working your way up through drill bits, it can be done safely enough.
-
@fiveten, thanks a lot, Spiros. I should be able to get this one finished next weekend.
-
Looks perfect from here, my friend @johnb!
-
To attach the antenna I first drilled a hole in the canopy with a 0.3mm drill. The antenna, Uschi van der Rosten, was first glued to the headrest. The other end went through the opening in the canopy, this […]
-
@clipper, thanks for the advice, Carl. I will search for the smallest drill bit I have. I was thinking about glueing the wire to the headrest so no glue is needed at the canopy. @fiveten, thank you, Spiros. […]
-
Looks excellent so far, my friend @johnb! If you decide to attach an antenna wire, our friend's @clipper advice is the way to go
-
This will be a small hole so go slow. You can help to mitigate the risk of the drill bit sliding by making a small punch mark with a pin. Attach the wire to the canopy and let it dry. Later attach it to the […]
-
Wash and satin coating applied. Canopy masks removed. I'm in doubt if I will attach the antenna wire, for that I need to glue it to the transparent part of the canopy or drill a tiny hole. In both cases the risk […]
-
@gblair, thank you, George. It was not that easy to get those parts on, lets hope they will stay on during the final steps. @fiveten, thanks a lot, Spiros. @eb801, thank you, Eric. The FuG16 Modane is a plastic […]
-
Excellent. What did you make those antennas out of? Wire and? @johnb. Sure does look like 1/48.
-
Excellent add-ons, my friend @johnb! Indeed, it easily passes for 1/48!
