This is a model that I will be building once I finish up my B-25 Mitchel family tribute build.

I have three kits to chose from, and so far I have not decided which one to make. There is a possibility that I may build more than one Bf-109 for this group. Time will tell exactly what happens here.

One model I have is a Hasegawa Special Edition kit that comes with a resin plug that is installed in the lower wing. This eliminates the bulge for the cannon that was used on the E-3 version.

Next is this one, and specific E-1 straight from the box without any mods needed. It is made by Eduard. It also looks very nice in the box, but it may not be as easy to build as the older Hasegawa kit based only on the number of parts included.

The last one is a 1/48 Tamiya Bf-109E-3. It too will have to be back dated by removing the bumps under the wings, similar to the Hasegawa kit, which also started out as an E-3 model. I have started working on one of the Tamiya E-3's, and it would be fairly easy to do the work needed.

These are the decal options provided by the Hasegawa kits.

This one is a plane flown by Hauptmann Hannes Trautloft of 2 / JG 77. This plane is Red 1.

The second Hasegawa decal option is for a plane flown by Leutnant Winfried Schmidt, of 5 / JG 77 in December of 1939. It too wears a Red One and a Cylinder Hat emblem from his time in Spain.

This is one of the Eduard decal options. It is a plane flown by the Commanding Officer of 1 / JG 77, Hauptmann Johannes Janke. The illustration states it is from August, 1939. I have reason to believe it would be the same in September when the "Phony War" started on the Western Front. The Phony War lasted from September,1939 through May of 1940.

This is the other decal option from Eduard. It shows a plane flown by Lt. Wolfgang Ludwig, of 9/ JG 26, from May, 1940.

If I decide to build the Tamiya kit, I found this awesome looking plane which is also a Hasegawa kit like mine, but with a different set of decals. As luck would have it, I can make this one using decals from the decal stash.

Time will tell which one, or possibly which one(s) I decide to make for the group.

I will be posting updates on here, once the B-25 family tribute build is completed. The B-25 will be posted in the headlines section on April 8th, as this is the date we lost our family member in this same B-25 that I have built a model of. It is not too far away, so things will start happening here soon. If I manage to get the B-25 completed prior to the 8th, I will start working on the 109(s), so please check back if you can. Thanks.

    As always, comments are encouraged.

    Thanks for stopping by.

    Beautiful sets, Louis @lgardner
Personally I do like the Emil most out of the entire series of 109's.
    Looking forward to them.

Something from the "other" side. Whichever one you go with, I'm sure you will do a fine job.
    Have fun 😎

I would probably go with the Eduard kit, Louis (@lgardner), but any of them will be a great model. Too bad the Eduard is the weekend edition without the mask and PE. Of course, it sounds like the "Sitzkreig" version would be perfect for this group.

Great entry, Louis @lgardner! Eager to see which scheme you will choose.

Hey Louis, E-1 a great choice! Only you could research a model with the word ‘Sitzkreig’ on the box. Such a classic early scheme, that one. To be fair, all three are. Can’t wait!

First off, Happy Easter to all of you.

I have been in contact with one of our resident 109 "Experten" Pedro Rocha Pedro L. Rocha (@holzhamer)

about building a Bf-109E3 in addition to the E1 version. These aircraft were built on the assembly line at the same time at a 60 to 40 ratio. So out of 10 aircraft on the assembly line, 6 would be built as the cannon armed E3, while the other 4 would be built as the MG armed version.

So they were in front line service at the same time. In fact, some of the E1's were converted to the upgraded E3 type after they had been placed in service in the Luftwaffe.

    This brings me to this.

This is an illustration of an E3, that has the same markings as Fritz Losigkheit. I'm going to build one of my partially assembled Tamiya kits as this aircraft using decals from the stash.

These are also several more examples of "Phony War" Emils that I can build using the Tamiya E3 kits I have started.

Then I have picked up an Eduard Overtrees kit so I can build two of the Edaurd E-1's, and I have a Hasegawa E1 kit too. I was thinking about building the versions I posted pictures of in my initial posting using these kits. I would build the Janke and Trautloft aircraft, and the last E1 would be either the Ludwig or Schmidt planes.

    Pedro L. Rocha (@holzhamer)
Thanks again Pedro, for helping me out with this vital information.

Take care everyone and I hope you all had a wonderful Easter holiday.

    He has risen.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I have made some progress on the Tamiya E-3 project. Here are a few pictures.

This is the kit that I started with.

The flaps were assembled and the wings were prepped for assembly.

Next the cockpit was built, and the associated fuselage parts were assembled too.

The next stages will be painting the cockpit stuff with some RLM 02 paint. However...

I will most likely end up pulling out another pair Tamiya E-3's from my stash, and then start working on them as well. I’m seriously considering making two of the other E-3’s that Pedro sent me pictures of on the illustrations. If this does happen, I will wait to paint the cockpit parts until I get them assembled to the same place as these parts are. It will be much easier to paint all three sets of parts at once.

The Black 1 and the Yellow 10 have been calling me ! I should have the correct decals in my stash to build these two fighters. Then I will have three E-3's and three E-1's for this build journal.

The 1/48 Tamiya E-3's will be used for the aircraft I just talked about.

I will then be building two of the 1/48 Eduard E-1's and the 1/48 scale Hasegawa E-1 too. They will be done as the Trautlof (Red 1), and Janke (Black Double Chevron) planes. I'm still not sure what the last E-1 will be, but I have been leaning towards the JG 26 Yellow 6, as flown by Wolfgang Ludewig.

    As always comments are encouraged.

    Thanks for stopping by.

These early war 109E's have a lot of distinctive paint schemes. Looking forward to watching this one come together, Louis (@lgardner).

Thank you. I agree as there are endless possibilities for paint schemes on these Emil's. To be perfectly honest, all of the 109's from the Emil through the K had all kinds of different options for painting. I think a person could easily build over 100 different 109's, and not have two alike.

These planes are so cool... But to be perfectly honest, my favorites were the FW-190's followed by the Me-262's. The 109's are my third choice for German fighters.

    Thanks again.
