Oh, and so sad to see the destruction being wrought by the flooding. I hope that you and yours are safe and unscathed.

Hi, Michael (@michaelt): Early war camo on these planes is a real subject of discussion on the various forums. The camo on the two 1/48 scale models seems fairly certain, but it's not. The paint scheme on the Hobby Boss is all RLM70, but it has been depicted in several artist renderings as RLM70 and RLM71. I found several good photos online, and in most of them the plane appears to be one color topside. But there are a couple where there seems to be a hint of a second topside color. I took a vote and went with the one color topside, mainly out of pure laziness. The camo on the 1/32 model that I am working on is a bit more of a conundrum. The plane was shot down very early in the Battle of Britain. It appears to be in standard early war two-color topside camo with mottling added. I don't build many 109s, but the evolution makes sense. They start the Polish invasion and the Phony War in paint schemes that weren't well suited for combat. The camo evolves into 2-color topside camo as the needs of combat demanded. Still searching for something to tone down the early schemes, they added mottling to break up the light blue sides on the fuselage. Apparently several squadrons experimented with a two-tone grey topside camo with mottling at this point. This is where things get interesting. The plane I am doing is depicted in sources with a standard two-color topside with mottling, but the the soldiers that arrived at the crash site in England described the plane as have a two-color gray topside camo. After doing some research, I discovered other planes in the same squadron with the two-color gray camo, but others in the squadron still had the standard camo. There are several black and white photos of the plane I am modeling, and the colors do look very similar. But in WW2 black and photos, there are a lot of colors that will look similar. I haven't decided which way I want to depict the plane.

Thanks for your kind words on the 1/48 scale builds. I plan to build the Trumpeter 1/32 109E-4 pretty much straight from the box, but I will need to source the decals for the model from several different sets of decals. I suspect you know a lot more about 109s than I do, so I hope you will follow along on the Trumpeter and feel free to make suggestions on the paint and markings.

The rain is lowly coming to an end here, but the flooding continues and they are still searching for a couple of dozen still missing. I think this tragedy is made worse my the fact that most of the dead and missing are kids from a summer camp for girls.

    Cheers.

Excellent job so far, my friend @gblair.
Glad you are safe form the floods. What a tragedy those floods were.

Great result from the weathering, George @gblair
Good to hear you are on the safe side of those flooding but what a terrible situation for the ones affected by it.

    @gblair,

Early colours were 70/71 (possibly a single colour at some point, but the low contrast and different types of film make this hard to be certain).

During the Polish campaign it was realised that this scheme was too dark for air combat, so the blue 65 was raised up the sides for the Battle of France.

Then, during the Battle of Britain, it was realised that these colours weren’t very good over The Channel, so RLM 02 upper and side mottling was added.

Some squadrons experimented with greys that later became RLM 74 and 75.

The British came to a similar conclusion about Dark Earth/Dark Green when leaning into France in 1941 which led to the Dark Earth being replaced by Ocean. The recomendation was to also use a grey-green (if I remember correctly).

If they had gone with the full recomendation, it would have led the RAF to paint their figters in a scheme similar to RLM 74/75.

Hi, Spiros (@fiveten), John (@johnb), Michael (@michaelt), and Felix (@fxrob). This is the first time I have really tried to understand the evolution of the different camo schemes that the Germans used early in the war. Once you see the entire evolution of the schemes, they all make sense. As usual, the needs of combat drove the many changes in the schemes.

You are right, Felix. Hard to understand. A lot of finger-pointing going on now, and they haven't even found all of the kids that were lost.

Anyway, I have finished both 1/48 models. As usual, I struggled to get the antenna wires in place. Also, as expected, the antenna mast pulled off the fuselage after I had finished the wires on the Hobby Boss model. After a few choice words, I dug a hole for the mast to sit it, reglued it, then added the wires again. I am off to Headlines to add these two builds. I want to thank all of you for following along on the builds, especially with your encouragement and observations. And George (@blackadder57), thanks for the tip on the Winsor and Newton. Now I am off to finish the 1/32 Trumpeter. Cheers everyone.

Thanks, Spiros (@fiveten). Now it is time to finish up the 1/32 plane, along with its mottle finish (which I have never done before). Yikes!

Both came out great, George. I'm partial to Yellow 3 but Hans's ride is a beauty as well.
Good luck and have fun with the 1/32 build. Looking forward to your progress on that one.
