IT'S ALIVE! First 3D printed pieces courtesy of my wonderful modeling friends here in MN. Engine composes nine pieces. It could be printed as one pie, but I wanted the chrome parts separate for ease of finishing.

Your 3D printed parts are brilliant, Matt (@coondog). This will really be a masterpiece when done. I have been using TinkerCad for creating stuff to print, but it is a very simple program. I really need to learn to use some better software. Your screen shots really show how much detail and work is involved in getting these parts. As I learned when I got my printer, it isn't a magic bullet until you have files to print. You should be very pleased with the detail and accuracy of your parts. Well done.

This post has been along time coming. I received a new years gift of parts and have been working on prepping the engine for assembly. I'm amazed at the size once I have the parts in hand. After viewing this project in 3D space for so long that I lost track of how big 1:8 scale is.

One of my biggest concerns has always been painting chrome. I don't like painting enamels or lacquers in the house so that eliminates the high-end metal finishes. AK's new Super Chrome solved that problem. It's a game changer and is working great for the chrome. It's a little pricey, but well worth the no-fuss application. I'll let photo do the rest of the talking.

The sheet metal parts and just incredible prints.

Frame comparison between my original scratch-built version and the 3D print.

    Painted and un-painted engine parts.

Making progress little by little. Also savoring the build a bit. Here's the assembled engine. I need to do a little cleanup on the fins, but everything ft together just how it should.

To me the fins do already look quite nice.
