Styrene thickness for scratch building

    Folks,

I'm going to order some styrene for an upcoming scratch build. I've built my own vacuum table and have made some small parts for RC aircraft that I have scratch built in the past, but I want to take a crack at doing some scratch building using styrene and plastics.

I'm looking for guidance on thickness primarily for wing and fuselage skins. I can get rolls in .010" (.25mm), .020"(.5mm), and .030" (.75mm), and of course sheets in thicker sizes. I realize thicker sizes for bulkheads, floors, etc., but I'm most interested in advice in what to go with for the skins.

Any thoughts or advice is appreciated!

    Hi Dion,
Definitely the 0.75 is too thick. For the skin the 0.25 would fit according to the model scale. For some usage I would even go for a thinner one as 0.13mm.

Dion, what scale will you be building? I build in 1:24 and I generally use 0.25, 0.5 and 1mm depending on the part. I have 2 models running on this site at the moment - Mirage F1 and Aerotek Ace which show the mould and part complexity when vacuum forming.
