@johnb Hi John, the decals should come before the green paint as it was applied in the field and either had to be painted around the existing markings (Hinomaru, aircraft tail number, manufacturer stencil, and various other stencils) or painted over existing markings (like the red no walk lines on the flaps). I think if you painted the red lines you would avoid the huge clear decal film in the middle of them and the inaccuracy of the decal itself (there should not be a red line near the aileron).
I think the painting the green camo is the most fun and interesting part of the process. Perhaps test thinning ratios, pressures and techniques out on a paint mule so as to get the best results that you can. I spent hours practicing before I painted my Ki-44 and 61 (no, I'm not a natural and need practice like everyone one else), and I think it helps your hand get used to the motion and speed required to pull it off. Of course, you paint German planes with their ever so light mottle, so I'm sure it'll look great.
