Sat down to day and completed the assembly. Paint shop next. I'm including a color photo of the original to show what I'm going to do. I used evergreen sheet to make the rear fairing to bring te fuselage line up to the canopy line.

That looks sweet, Tom @tcinla. Questions: How thick is the sheet you used? Is that a piece of curved metal behind the seat and protruding forward from under the new sheet fairing? Mind describing the steps you did here to get it all just right?

@eb801 - .020 sheet styrene, laid over the rear fuselage to get the proper outline, then cut. All the rear edge sanded down to paper thin, then rolled to shape and glued in place. As far as I can tell, that was sheet metal under the new fairing. In this case, a piece of .010 x .060 evergreen strip glued around the forward edge of the kit fuselage. That was to make an air-tight seal at the end of the rear canopy.

Here it is painted and the canopies installed. I used Mr Color Super Metallics SM-208 "Super Duraluminum".

Decals tomorrow afternoon and maybe final assembly. Nic thing decal-wise is it didn't have any stencils.

Looking good Tom (@tcinla). This certainly makes for a unique addition to the Mustang stable. I think that one could probably spend a lifetime just building Mustang variations (and Spitfires and ME-109's for that matter).

Are you gloss coating the super metallic areas prior to decaling. My experience with other metallics has been hit or miss in this regard. I'm debating on whether to paint or decal the markings on my foiled Thunderbolt.

No, I don't do anything to the SM paints. So far, so good.

You're right about doing variants like those.

That NMF came out perfectly, Tom @tcinla

Nice work getting that rear part of the canopy scratchbuilt, Tom (@tcinla). The Super Metallics really look good. I just got some in the mail, so I hope to try it soon.

Actually it's just another canopy for a Birdcage - the D-Day double klit has both birdcage and malcolm options for both kits, so I had "extra." The seat is the early version for the P-51B-1.
