I am not a car guy, but I am a Bond guy. I have always liked this Mustang that was featured in Diamonds Are Forever. I think I will always remember the iconic car chase through downtown Las Vegas. I have taken a couple of weeks off from modeling so I can rearrange and sort my hobby room, and then I planned to start building two WW2 German planes. During the reorg of my room, I managed to misplace all of the PE, masks, and decals for my projects, so I plugged this car build while I was trying to find the missing stuff.

I have wanted to build this car for a long time, and I was spurred on by the recent release (or re-release?) of this kit. I read an article on this kit which said this was a new release with new molds. When I checked Scalemates, they said this kit was from 2023, with new parts in 2024. Not completely new, but new enough to have some really nicely molded parts with no flash. The decals are what I think of when I think of the old AMT decals: thick and lots of extra clear film. These decals were also slightly out of register, but useable. There are 80-90 decals to place on this model, making it a lot like putting the stencils on an F-4C.

I am building in sub-assemblies, and pre-painting as much as I can using rattle-can paints. I have found that the decals work fine as long as I cut away as much of clear film as I can and use plenty of strong decal fluid on them. Once the decals are dry, I spray the part with clear flat. I don't plan to add anything to the kit that isn't already provided, so I won't embarrass myself by trying to add all of the spark plug wiring and any other wiring not included in the kit. I also found the files to print a Sean Connery 007 figure standing in one of his iconic poses, so I have printed the figure, which I plan to paint and add to a small diorama with the car.

I have ordered the Cobra Automotive Paints from Ammo for this kit. They are lacquers, and the clear is a two-part lacquer consisting of the clear and a hardener. It looks like it might produce a really nice exterior finish. If the paints don't arrive in time, then I will continue to use my ready-steady Tamiya rattle-can paints.

Today was my birthday and I spent most of the day with my kids and my granddaughter. I will be watching the Super Bowl later, so not much done today. Should get some more done tomorrow. Cheers.

For some reason, I can't edit this article. I wanted to add additional photos. So here they are.

Great choice and perfect birthday build, George @gblair. Read your comments in the current FSM. Wow... is that Jill St. John in styrene? Just kidding. Have fun Bonding!

Thanks, Eric (@eb801): I watch Bond films all the time, especially the Sean Connery films. I was reading that they closed the downtown Vegas area for 5 straight nights to film the car chase in Diamonds Are Forever. Never been done before or after. Only 007 could do that. A lot of differing opinions about the magazine that month, but I liked it. When I got back into modeling a while back, I would have loved having all of these techniques compiled and presented like that. FSM Editor, Aaron Skinner, is leaving the magazine and moving to Round 2. I liked how he did things, sorry to see him go. You had a great idea there---maybe I can find a print file for Jill St. John. My next car model when I get around to it will be Chief Hopper's Chevy Blazer from Stranger Things. Another of my favorite shows. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Happy Birthday George. The gift of time with loved one is always memorable. Especially, for the youngsters. Sean Connery is one of my favorite bonds too. Jill St.John was easy on the eyes as well as that Red Mustang. Looking forward to seeing more of your progress.

Looks like a great kit, @gblair, happy birthday, and I’m also looking forward to more of your build. I hope that those different makes of paint don’t create any problems for you.

Hi Stephen (@stephen-w-towle): Thanks, 74 has been a tough birthday for some reason. Sean Connery is my favorite because he started the franchise and set the mark to beat. Plus, he was really cool. There were a lot of memorable Bond women with really cool names, like Tiffany Case. I want to clear this one off the bench soon so I can get back to planes.

Hi George (@chinesegeorge): I don't do many cars, so this should be fun. It is a nice kit, so far, especially at a more reasonable price compared to some of the Tamiya and other car kits. Working with paint is always one of the great mysteries for me. I am always amazed when it works without any drama.

Thanks, Spiros (@fiveten) and John (@johnb). Quick kit while I was gathering the stuff for the next two builds. I have everything finally, so time to finish the Mach 1.

I got the interior parts painted and prepped, and then assembled the interior. I followed the color call-outs in the instructions, so hopefully they were correct. I had previously painted the bottom of the car, as well as all of the parts to build the frame and exhaust system. I started assembly of the frame and front suspension, which I glued and clamped to make sure everything was where it was supposed to be. I hope to finish the frame and suspension tomorrow and move on to the exterior. The Cobra auto paints from Ammo came today, so all I need to do is figure out how to use them. More on that tomorrow.

Sean Connery is the only James Bond. The others are mere pretenders to the throne they will never occupy as did Sir Sean.

This looks like it's going to be fun.
