This has all been a fun learning experience, Brian (@brithebuilder). I figure this is baby steps. I am currently printing a large figure of Luke on Hoth riding a Tauntaun. I really need to up my game before I try that one. I really like using oils, especially with Odorless Turpenoid, which dries flat. I learned the hard way not to use too much paint. I finally got my Saturn printing again, so I am back on the road again.

@gblair - Luke riding a Tauntaun sounds like a fun project. I'll be watching that one for sure.
I never had odorless... That may make oils more pleasant.

Thanks for stopping by, Brian (@brithebuilder), Spiros (@fiveten), and John (@johnb). It will take a while to get Luke going. I had some pieces that wouldn't print on my old printer, so I put it aside in a box. My new printer should print these parts easily, but I need to go back and figure which parts are missing. The entire Luke print has over 20 parts to print.

The need to prepaint and undercoat with acrylics leads directly into the need to figure out the colors. If you search online for the colors that the conquistadors wore, they fall into two distinct groups. Most of the modern sources show bright armor and bright, vivid colors. The more academic sources tend to show very dull colors with lots of leather. I don't remember a lot of the world history courses I took back in the stone age, but I do remember that bright colors were expensive back then and were usually only affordable by the affluent. I tend to think that the dull colors are more accurate, so I am underpainting using Vallejo paints in dull colors. The good news about underpainting is that I get to see what he looks like with my color choice while there is still time to change them if they don't work. I still need to do a few more colors tomorrow, but I think he is moving in a good direction.

@gblair - Looking great George. I agree with your color concept here. I seriously doubt that they would have actually worn extremely bright colors.

Hi Brian (@brithebuilder), Spiros (@fiveten), and John (@johnb). I am almost through with the underpainting. I want to see how he looks overall before I finalize the colors. He looks pretty drab. I may need to tweek the colors.

I didn't like the colors I had chosen for the figure. I suppose I could have simply painted over them, but I worried about paint buildup. The nice thing about acrylics is that they are easy to remove. I soaked the figure in alcohol for a few minutes and then cleaned the figure with a stiff brush. Even the black lacquer primer came off. So, back to square one, which is what I was after. New colors soon.

    Thanks, John (@johnb).

In preparation for colors, I sprayed the figure with Tamiya Fine Gray Primer from a can. I have also found a depiction of a Conquistador that I like, so I think the new colors are coming together.
