@gblair - Thanks George, I appreciate it, and I'm sure you are correct. I doubt that they would have been dying leather frequently, but... since you can't see either in the original Frazetta painting, I'm going with the idea of sting ray leather or something like that... didn't the Japanese sword makers use some form of sea creature skins for handle wraps so they didn't become slippery in battle.

@gblair - I agree with your logic behind the drab or more drab colors for the Conquistadors. And dirty, they probably didn't do laundry too frequently. But, yes, the same applies to my project. Colors can be a challenge, but I generally attempt to keep some overall color balance as well as wanting a few things here and there to pop. Keeps the eye moving around the entire piece.

More base colors... Not much of this is actually visible in the Frazetta painting. The red cloak is there and the light/white loin cloth of the dead guy on the ground is visible. The rest is... intuition.
