The Saab 29 Tunnan, colloquially Flygande tunnan (English: "The flying barrel"), is a Swedish fighter that was designed and manufactured by Saab in the 1940s. It was the second turbojet-powered combat aircraft to be developed in Sweden, the first being the Saab 21R, and it was the first Western European fighter to be produced with a swept wing post World War II, only being preceded in Western Europe as a whole by the Me 262 built during the war.Despite its rotund appearance, from which its name is derived, the J 29 was fast and agile and served effectively in both fighter and fighter-bomber roles into the 1970s.

The kit (first impressions)

Looking and having in my arms the box , I have the feeling of a sturdy , well packed and designed box , capable of effectively protecting its contents .
Unfortunatelly , some of the smallest resin parts , was “liberated” from their castings , and one more , small too , was broken from one of the landing wheel wells .
Fortunately everything is easy to restore, but apparently it needs a little more careful packaging .
The artwork is nice painted by hand from an unknown artist and presents one of the UN planes , during the period of their service over Congo .
Apparently due to a typographical error, the aircraft is referred to as “Soviet fighter” and in some places labels have been stuck on with the correct one, that is “Swedish fighter” .
Instructions booklet and decals sheet , are sealed in a clear envelope , protected from humidity and scratches .
Plastic parts , are also protected within a clear bag , as well as clear parts and resins too .

Into the kit

As usual (and for an unknown reason) , FLY once again avoids mounting some alignment pins on the biggest parts , but fortunately their quality and purity makes the parts to come toghether easy , even without pins .
The plastic is hard enough to keep is shape , and the same time soft as you need for easy cutting , drilling , scribing or sanding during the construction .
The surfaces are smooth, clean and glossy , having all the details in the form of an engraved, fine line
Fuselage is coming in two , left and right parts including the tail , so when the time comes to be able to close it easily without fear that something is not straight .
Wing is following fuselage’s philosophy , with clean scribing details on and having all the control surfaces in the “neutral position” , besides, in their photos the Tunnan usually appear having all their surfaces in this position .
Continuing with the external details , we can easy locate two big opening on fuselage sides , both for the landing gear wells , offered as resin parts made by Artillery.
Resin is also the cockpit thub , seat , rudder pedals , gunsight , all the wheels and some small parts for the landing gear .
Also in plastic , are comes two different type of external fuel tanks , to choose wich one will load to your airplane .
Alot of small parts are in a dedicated tree with good casting quality . Some small amounts of flash are here and there , but nothing you can’t deal with it with a new blade and a sanding stick .
At the end , the clear parts : all are really very clear and clean , providing canopy in open or closed position , taxiing lights , navigation lights and gunsight screen .
Last , but not least , the decals sheet .
Perfectly printed by Bodecek Decals and registered on a thin film without useless film around , and vivid , clear and correct colors provides all the necessarily for any of four different airplanes :
one of Swedish AF , United Nations Detachment with camo over the upper surfaces and natural metal undersides , one as above but in overall natural metal , and two more from Swedish AF , one with Green upper surfaces and natural metal undersides and one with overall natural metal finish .
At the very end , in a second , small decals sheet , comes the instruments from instrument panel .

Conclussion

FLY , for one more time seemed to listen to the voices heard in the background and after waiting patiently, made her move presenting something unique, betting on her fanatical friends but also on the rarity of this particular kit .
If we calculate both its undoubded quality and its reasonable price (78.80€ @ 19/03/2022) then , logically this particular kit will be one of the hits for this year .
Easy to assembly , without endless parts and friendly engineered , right in shape and dimensions with quality resin and decals , has the whole package .
