When I travel, I tend to take lots of pictures of planes and ships when I find these may be useful for references in model building. Would these be appropriate to share in iModeller? And, if so, under which. category of article?

I suggest you publish these under "Photo collections" category, tagged with aircraft type. I'd suggest full name of the object in the title, something in the style of "North American P-51D Mustang in Duxford - walkaround"
I do have plans to highlight the reference articles such as walkarounds in the Database section. Some time next year... :/
