Thanks, John (@johnb). I feel like I've kind of jumped into the deep end of the pool with this project.

Time for a brief update. Work continues on the Beaufighter, though slowly. I usually put in about an hour or so every couple of days, so this will be a drawn-out process.

I've been focusing on the wheel wheels and landing gear/undercarriage as this will ultimately determine if the model will use a wheels-up or down configuration. I really want to do wheels down.

The first picture shows an early test fitting of the main undercarriage components in the starboard engine nacelle.

The next picture shows more of the gear components test fitted. I've discovered that I will have to make some modifications to the shock absorbers to change the mounting for the two struts that are used to raise and lower the main gear. The mounting points for these struts have to be moved further inboard. I will also have to fabricate a new part for the ram (which expands to lower the landing gear and contracts to raise it). The one that came with the kit is too short.

Wonderful scratch building, my friend @gwfabian! As you have pointed out a number of modifications will be necessary to the kit parts, in order to conform to your new wheel wells. Looking fantastic so far!

This is wonderful scratch building indeed, Greg @gwfabian
With those details it even looks like it is able to extend and retract.

This landing gear is certainly a real lesson in scratchbuilding, Greg @gwfabian. The amount of work necessary to improve this kit is certainly daunting. I have this kit, so if I ever start it I will need to use your build as a guide.

Thanks, Spiros (@fiveten). It's getting there, slowly but surely.

Thanks @johnb, just as long as it doesn't decide to retract once everything is glued in place!

This certainly has been a lesson to me, @gblair. A lot of trial and error has gone into this. I hope this thread can be of assistance to others if they decide to go down this road.

A brief update on the Beaufighter project. While working on the landing gear bays, I began to think of how to fabricate the "fuel dump ducts" (my term, not Bristol's). These are small parts that Revell skipped over when they (over)simplified the gear doors. The picture below shows these ducts.

I started by cutting small squares of sheet plastic and gluing them together with the intention sanding the edges and gluing a plastic dowel to serve as the pipe. Sanding something this small was a real chore (especially with osteoarthritis in my thumbs), so I wanted to find another way. Along came Blender, a 3D rendering program, and access to 3D printers at my friendly local public library. Maybe I could use Blender to create a 3D model of the ducts and ship the files off to the library for printing? Five weeks later, this is what I came up with:

My next steps are to scale down the 3D model (currently they're probably almost life size) and ship the file off to the library. If this works, I'll probably make more extensive use of Blender and 3D printing to make custom parts for the 'Beau.

Nice work on designing your parts for printing, Greg (@gwfabian). 3D printing opens up a really interesting avenue for scratchbuilding. I have been printing parts for a while, but I am still fairly dependent on files that someone else creates. I have done some simple designs in TinkerCad, but doing stuff in Blender is next level stuff. Really looking forward to watching how your 3D printing moves this build forward.

Beautiful 3D design, my friend @gwfabian! These parts will really make difference on the model!

Those are designed beautifully, Greg @gwfabian
For sure they will add a lot to this build.

Greg, this is an absolutely inspiring build, amazing work on the undercarriage. Can't wait to see the end result!

@johnb Thank you, John. Blender is a real challenge (at least for me) to learn, but I think with some patience I can use it to my advantage. I'm just beginning to dip my to into this 3D print world.
