I started this build in the Aero Engine group, but have been asked by Louis to include it here.

The British Wolseley Viper V8 aero engine was developed during the Great War from the Hispano Suize 8Ab engine. The SE5 fighter aircraft was designed to use the Hispano Suize engine but once in production it was found to be unreliable and often failed in flight.
Wolseley had a license to build the HS 8Ab engines which they did and called it the Wolseley Adder, its only difference from the HS 8Ab was higher compression, but it still did not solve the SE5 reliability problems.
Wolseley engineers then redeveloped the Adder/8Ab engine . This new engine looked like its predecessor, however it was more powerful and much more reliable, becoming the most successful water cooled engine of its time and consequently making the SE5a the excellent fighter that it was.
The kit has 2 sprue sheets, 1PE sheet and a display stand base with the insructions in the usual Roden format, except very small writing and many details missing.
    So it begins.

pic1. cylinders cleaned and joined, spark plugs drilled out, new ones to be made.

pic2. Magnetos assembled and spark plug leads added, 8 wires 0.2mm per magneto. Carby assembled and PE mesh (1/72 machine gun barrel mesh ) fitted to intake.

pic3.Spark plugs fitted to cylinders, .5mm tube inside .8mm tube with .3mm wire in centres.

pic4.Spark plug wire conduits .8mm tube with coke can brackets plug wires attached ,plugs painted. Now to fit to engine block.

All this has to be done before cylinders and block come together otherwise there is no room to work.

Your Right George, but we usually hide them under engine cowling .

Thank you for posting this over here. I am very impressed by your work. It's going to look fantastic when you get it done and all of the wiring and plumbing is done. I'm thinking about getting one of the SE-5 kits made by Roden that have this engine installed. Like you mentioned, one was gear driven and one was not. Going from memory here, I think they had troubles with the gear drives. I might have it reversed / backwards though.

My favorite engine from this era is the German Mercedes inline six. It would really be cool to build a group of aircraft engine models all in the same scale. Ones like the Hispano Suiza, Mercedes six, Clerget, Bentley, Gnome Rhone, Oberusell, and the biggest I think would be the Liberty V-12.

Welcome to the group, and I look forward to your next postings.

Thanks you all for the encouragement, Louis the geared engine was the problem. I have detailed a Mercedes in 1/32 but it is hidden in an Albatros D111.Details added were, spark plugs and leads with plug lead conduits, valve springs and valve rockers .

Cylinders fitted to engine block, carby fitted. Removed plastic bleed/prime valves from intake manifold and fitted new ones made from .6mm brass tube with .4mm copper handles.
Added 1mm copper wire for coolant pipes instead of the plastic ones supplied.
Can see the finish line ahead!.
