Hi everyone, thanks to Martin’s @martin @techsupport hard work, I’ve been able to open a new WIP in the automotive group. More motorbikes, this time it’s the Tamiya 1/12 Yamaha R1, but I couldn’t decide on the colour scheme, so I’m building two, one in red and white and the other in blue. Here’s the kit -

    More to come, happy modelling.

An amazing double entry, my friend @chinesegeorge! The R1 is a beloved bike and I am looking really forward to see both schemes, tackled by your skills.

Best decision if you cannot make a choice, George @chinesegeorge
Doing both is the best thing to decide then.
    Looking forward to them.

Tamiya give you a choice of four colour schemes, two from 1998, one red and white and one blue.

And two from 1999, again one red and white and one blue. It’s unfortunate these instructions are in black and white. The parts of the frame and the forks that are visible are plated silver. I’ve just tried to download the pictures but they’ve failed again @martin @techsupport.
    Happy modelling.

They seem to have worked this time. Martin @martin @techsupport, the first time I took the photos on my iPhone and they wouldn’t down load. This time I took the pictures on my Sony camera, then transferred them to my iPhone, via Sony’s Imaging Edge app, and then they successfully downloaded to iModeler. Hope this info helps.

Great choice to build two George. I have the same kit somewhere in my stash, so going to follow with interest.I thought I was the only one with uploading photo challenges...LOL

Thanks, Rory @rory, yes, it seems to be yet another great Tamiya kit. The problems with loading photos seems to be with Apple iPhones and iPads, tech support haven’t fixed it yet. Looking forward to seeing your Kawasaki here. Happy modelling.

Thanks Rory @rory, Spiros @fiveten, and John @johnb. I don’t think the R1 needs much of an introduction, but if you need more info I’d recommend my friend Richard McStay’s article @richardmcstay48gmail.com, I think Richard has owned at least two R1s, and they are something of a favourite of his.

Anyway, let’s make a start. Construction begins with the engine, but, as usual, I started with the wheels and brake discs/rotors. Apart from drilling out all the cooling holes (that’s quite a lot of drilling), I gave the discs a coat of black followed by a top coat of Tamiya’s silver, I’m not adding any aftermarket parts on these builds. The wheels themselves are black on the red and white bike, and silver on the blue bike. A little sanding to get rid of the centre seam on the tyres, and job done. The first picture shows the components,

and the second one the completed front wheels.

Thanks for looking, and, as always, happy modelling.

    Greta start, my friend @chinesegeorge!
The R1 made such an impact upon its introduction in 1998 and, with significant upgrading through the years, still raises heads today!

    Very nice start, George @chinesegeorge
It once was on my wishlist but eventually it was a touring bike, Suzuki Vstrom, that made its way to my garage.

Hi Rory @rory, thanks for your comment, the next Ducati will probably be the Superleggera that Tamiya are due to release in October, not sure when it will be available here in China though, some unscrupulous dealers are advertising it already.

    Happy modelling.

Unfortunately I think the Superleggera will take some time to arrive in South Africa, but will make a great model.
