Last living Flying Tiger gone.

February 8, 2020 · in News · 3 · 1.1K

Having been privileged to know five of these guys - three pilots, two groundcrewmen - this is a sad day. They were an amazing and inspiring group.

  1. The name of the model club I'm in is The Flying Tiger Scale Model Builders in their honor. The club President, Leo Cox's late father was a Flying Tiger. So sad, history marches on.

  2. My cousin, Captain John David Shytle Jr. Flying Tiger pilot was decorated with 4 Distinguished Flying Crosses. I have a picture of Gen. Chenault presenting him with a DFC. Following his return to civilian life he was controller for the Veterans Admin in Wash. DC for 12 years. Following that he was Administrator of the McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond, VA before joining Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC as Assistant Vice President for Health Affairs. • It's interesting how so many of those guys came home and continued to be proud of doing public service. They were a better group of citizens than too many of we.
