1/450 Hasagawa HMS Vanguard
Seeing Marcello Rosa's excellent HMS Vanguard the other day prompted me to post these pics of my one.
I finished this about 6 years ago I think, before the advent of all the superb 3d printed parts now available.
I reworked the main foward superstructure as the kit one is representative of the earlier KGV class and is too narrow on the front face compared to vanguard. Also added was the rear accommodation fitted for the royal party visit to South Africa.
I moulded some of the boats in resin from hand carved wooden masters. Nowadays they'd be 3d printed!
Wooden decking was added as were metal main and secondary gun barrels. Masting is brass low temp brazed and soldered. Etched brass by Peter Hall, with fishing line for the rigging.
The base is done with high density poly foam board attacked with a gas flame to simulate the wave form. On top of this is glued paper, painted and gloss coated with cotton wool for the bow waves and sidewash.
Beautiful. Superb work, Richard.
The Vanguards are coming out of the woods, and this is one of the best!
It looks like I underestimated the length of the whip antennas in the fore and quarterdeck.
Your sea base is also superb, I wish I had thought of doing something similar.
BTW, I wondered all the time about what were those 4 vertical structures that look like chutes, running down from the deck to the waterline on both sides. You also represented them - do you know what they are actually for?
Waste scuttles I think, but I stand to be corrected! Likewise with your plate work on the hull, I wish I'd thought of that!
That was my guess, too, but I never found this information anywhere.
Excellent job and wonderful result, Richard! Welcome aboard!
Excellent diorama.
