Aki Models 1/72 Sea Fury F.B.11

August 7, 2016 · in Aviation · · 2 · 1.7K

I built this back in 2007. This kit by Aki can stand close comparison with the magnificent 1/32 Fisher in terms of detail and production quality, which is remarkable when one considers this is done in the smaller scale. This kit features posable flaps, open detailed gun bays, and a complete Centaurus engine that can be displayed with the cowling opened.

The parts of the kit are amazing in 1/72. The wing is in three parts - upper, lower, and the fuselage fairing, with fully detailed wheel wells, flap wells that have wing rib detail in them, and gun bays as mentioned. The clear resin canopies are as thin as vacuforms; both closed and open options are provided.

Decals are for a Sea Fury FB Mk 11 operated from HMS Theseus in the Korean War, which are taken from the Royal Navy Historic Flight's Sea Fury, and an Iraqi Sea Fury in desert camouflage.

Assembly is a breeze. I painted all small parts before attaching them. Kit decals proved all markings including the "invasion stripes" and they went on without problem. I finished the airplane with the gun bays in the left wing open and those in the right closed, with the flaps full down to see the interior detail, and with the cowling panels off.

At $85 MSRP, this is definitely one of the more expensive 1/72 kits out there, but "every penny is on the screen" as we say in the movies. Likely only to be found now from collectors.
