@stephen-w-towle, thanks for this information, Stephen. The decal set used is KitsWorld KW172019 and seems to be specifically for Sally B, even stating the aircraft at Duxford. Mine is indeed an early G-model so that explains the gunner windows, I could have figured out at the beginning but was too enthusiastic building this model I guess. Besides that, I'm pretty happy with the looks of the decals so far.

Made a start on the weathering.
To compare, I gave the starboard wing a lightly weathering while the portside wing received a more severe weathering.
I do know Sally B is kept in good condition, but personally I tend to go for the more severe weathering, wondering what you all think about it.

    John,

Kit world did not do there home work on the cowling and may have used other research material. Even if the packaging say's "Sally B". That's my point. I have come across comments from people who research aircraft/ kits and find that the decals aren't up to snuff. Regardless, the weathering adds to your build and makes things look interesting. Sally B. is a flying tribute to the Airmen who flew B-17s it is, apropos to show the war time look in my opinion. It works.

Weathering on the Fortress done. Besides the propellors, also some of the smaller final parts, antenna and landing light covers, are added.

The ball turret and barrels for the tail and chin section and some touch-ups to be done.
After that a matt coating and removing the masks.

I like the heavy weathering, John (@johnb). 99% of the photos of actual wartime aircraft show planes that are heavily weathered. The decals I am using for my Sea Fury indicate some painted areas that don't match the photos I have found, so I share your frustration with decal instructions.

@fiveten, thanks a lot, Spiros. I should be able to finish the Fortress this week. Need some bench space for the Mustang 🙂

@gblair, thank you, George. I did show my dad, who also saw the aircraft in real, the progress so far, and even with a picture of the actual aircraft next to it, he did not notice the difference, so currently I except the result as is.

@airbum, thanks a lot, Erik. So do I, although I'm still in worries if the nose will look correct.
