@eb801 - Mission Models Paints tops my list of paints I won't use. Bought a bunch, tried a couple, returned the rest to the shop I bought them from. The paint is too picky - you can't use it in an airbrush you have used other paint in. Not to mention the @#$#@! who owns the company is a @#$##@! when you try to deal with him.

    Basic Paint Finished!
I finally completed the first and hopefully last round of camo painting. The painting went smoothly with only a smidgeon of paint pullup. I believe these planes sent to North Africa and the Mediterranean were most likely hastily painted in their desert camo by ground crews right on the tarmac once they arrived in the blazing sun, judging by the photos I've seen and the sloppy workmanship and smudgy paint. Can anybody verify this?

Now that the basic camo painting is done, I'll be doing touch up and detailing etc over the next few days and then apply a couple of coats of Future and I'll be ready for decals. Could the finish line be somewhere down the road?

    Stay tuned.

    Looking fantastic, my friend @eb801!
Regarding the hastily done painting, I would put a safe bet for sure! Those were hard times!
In this net pic, taken from http://saafww2pilots.yolasite.com/ the paint seems field applied and not in a totally uniform way...

Spiros @fiveten: Thanks for sending that photo which I believe has been colorized. It’s the proof I was looking for.

Now I wish I had ratted up the paint job way more than I did.
I’m finally beginning to realize less paint is often more. Thinning the paint and knowing when to stop spraying too much is the hard part. That black mottled preshading worked fine but I should have lightened up on the camo and let it “soak” in and do its thing. Each model is a learning experience, isn’t it?

John @johnb - Decaling is my fave part. I’m going to try a new to me clear spray (instead of Future) called Gauzy, an acrylic made by AK Interactive. After that cures I will proceed. However a family get away is lurking so I will be away from the bench for a week or so.

You ever get any of that elastic white Tamiya tape for curves?

@eb801, always nice to have a family get away up ahead. Looking forward to how that Gauzy works with decalling. Next weekend the World Model Expo will take place in Eindhoven and for sure I will go there. Hope to get the elastic tape overthere.

I only started using the 2mm vinyl tape a couple of years ago. Wouldn't be without it now... it doesn't solve every masking problem but it's pretty d*mn good.

Fantastic build, Eric, would love to get this kit again but it's getting hard to find at a realistic price nowadays. Looking forward to the next instalment.

Ian @ij001: Exactly same thoughts as you about that Tamiya vinyl tape. Like you stated, it doesn't solve all masking issues but it sure is essential part of my toolbox and I use it all the time. Is that a Revell or ICM Dornier you have masked off?

    Decal Time!

After giving the Boston a couple of mists of Gauzy to clear coat everything early in the morning, I was ready for decals by late afternoon. Here's a glimpse of where I am going with these North African markings, early 1942. I am totally impressed with this Gauzy glossy varnish. First time I've ever used it. More decaling to come in a couple of weeks when I get back from family camp trip. Probably end up using South African markings.
