I've added the slats to the wing leading edges and faired them in with putty.

I closed up the fuselage and added the nose cone and section behind the cockpit that contains the rear quarter windows.

The noise is the weak part of this kit as it needs to faired into the fuselage with putty, otherwise there is a waisted effect - I should have taken a before photo.

I can remember this being the same for the TriMaster kit when I built it around 1990.

The fit of the section behind the cockpit was a bit off and needed to be carefully sanded down.

The nose is faired in now as is the tail.
I've just attached the wings and the seams need cleaning up.
It is almost up to painting.

A bit of progress with the painting today.
I'm doing this one in parallel with the 1/23 Meng Fokker Dr.I which has priority on my time.

And now a nice coat of Gunze H414 RLM 23.
I picked this paint up on a whim a little while ago - before I bought this kit - and I am very happy with the shade.
It is a little darker than the sample in my copy of "The Official Monogram Painting Guide to German Aircraft 1935-1945" but it catches the right, slightly muted tone of the red.
I think it is a much better colour for the aircraft than a standard brighter red would be.

This aircraft was painted red over night before the type's first combat flight as a tribute to the Red Barron and a s a surprise for the pilot, Maj Spate.
As such, it would have been a hurried job, so I've left the nooks and crannies of the underside in the original pale blue.

I also think this red shade is very "correct", my friend @michaelt!

    G'day Spiros (@fiveten),
You managed to reply before I'd corrected my double posting of the top-side photo.
By the way, I was admiring your build of the Shenyang J-5 on Modelling Madness.
Your build is out of my usual scale, but I would like to build a 1/48 Mig-7/Shenyang J-5 one day...

Thanks for liking my J-5, my friend @michaelt! The Mig-17/Lim-6/J-5s carried some reallyexotic schemes, apart from the "usual" ones, so you will have a lot of interesting options!

    G'day Spiros (@fiveten),

A few of years ago I sat in the cockpit of a MiG-17 (actually a Polish built Lim-6M).

I'm about 1.87m tall (6 ft 1/5in) and sitting in the cockpit (admittedly without having adjusted the seat height) my eyeline was roughly in line with the top of the windscreen. I would have had to duck significantly to close the canopy. That is a very small cockpit to fly such a fast aircraft in, and possibly escape from in an emergency.

You did really well on the 'reddish', Michael @michaelt
Looking forward to the decalling session.
Ps. Also agree on your comment about the J-5 at MM from our friend Spiros @fiveten
