Top surfaces. I took the same approach but the dark colour means it wasn’t as effective. I may go over them with a lightened colour.
The wings and tail are just sitting in place.

SMS do both the semi-gloss Sea Blue (Dark Sea Blue) and a matt Sea Blue (Dark Ocean Blue).
I sprayed the former over most of the wings and tails and the latter along the leading edges as per the USN practice.
There is no discernable difference, as you would expect as they should be the same colour, FS 2/35042.

Even though the effect is less, it does look great, Michael @michaelt
Lighten some panels a bit will definitely increase the effect.

I mixed a little white into the Sea Blue and over sprayed the fabric control surfaces, to fade them, and random blotches on the metal surfaces. I then lightly over sprayed the latter with straight Sea Blue to blend things together.
In the right light, the wing now has a mix of blues with a little of the green apparent, but this is probably not apparent in the photo.

Indeed, the painting result is very realistic, my friend @michaelt!

I’ve made a start on painting the fuselage.
It is 33 deg outside at the moment and forcast for 38 deg tomorrow (91 and 100 F).
As I paint outside, I wont be getting more done this weekend.
Wings and tail are not glued on yet.

    Very nice paintwork, Michael @michaelt
Those are clearly summer temperatures, currently at 10 degrees C in the Netherlands and some drizzle.

This is the only photo I can find of the actual aircraft I’m building.

And this is my go at painting the fuselage.

Unfortunately, over handling the model by the tail broke the rudder off.

I painted the sea blue and white first and was going to mask, with a raised paper mask, and paint the intermediate blue, but I found that the modelling gods were smiling on me and I managed to do it freehand.

I did the random spray technique again and then added some white to both the sea blue and int. blue and applied a light, random mottle.

Great result on the freehanded painting, Michael @michaelt
Also the mottling looks very nice.
