I think next time (if there ever is a next time) I decide to foil a model, it will be one with more square outlines!

I did the horizontal stabilizers today and they were quite difficult. But they are installed now. Next up will be to do the horizontal and vertical stabilizer fillets on the fuselage. Maybe in a day or two! 🙂

Those stabilizers do look great, Carl @clipper
All the hours spent are definitely worth the outcome.

Thanks Spiros (@fiveten), John (@johnb), and Bernard (@lis). I suspect the wings are going to be a challenge as well, at least the trailing edges and wing tips.

Another project that has slipped some in the past weeks. But I got over one of the hurdles this morning, one that's difficult enough, that it was easy to say, day after day, "I'll get to that tomorrow". But thing about things like this is that when you don't do them, and they need to be done and you think about doing them everyday, then these sort of tasks "Own You".

So, I worked it on this morning and got it done. I'm talking about foiling the remaining horizontal stabilizer fillets and the leading edge fillet for the vertical stabilizer. The vertical stabilizer fillet was more difficult because it had to wrap around the leading edges of the horizontal stabilizer wing roots and back up against the fuselage.

I broke the foiling into smaller panels to make this easier, and doing the horizontal stabilizer fillets was fairly easy. The forwardmost part of vertical stabilizer fillet was also fairly easy, only the aft part being more difficult.

The fillet is one of those areas on this model that is engineered in a very "interesting" way, Carl (@clipper). Much less of a problem area if you are painting, but adding foil is a much more difficult process. I think it came out great.

All looking perfect from here, Carl @clipper
Definitely not an easy task to wrap this fillet.

The other build I have been spending time on lately. Like the Mohawk build, I wanted to wait until I had something more to post about. The P-47N version with the larger wings is such a cool looking bird. I included this photo even though the wings are not glued on yet (hence the gaps at the roots)

With the fuselage essentially foiled except for the wing roots, I wanted to get the wing going next. However, the kit has an internal landing gear bay which needed to be assembled and painted before the wings could be assembled. There are several areas that needed attention. First the ailerons didn't quite match up to the upper wing opening and I had to do a bit of shimming to extend them. There are still some gaps , especially at the wing tips which will need addressing.

And finally, I needed to address how I was going to do the wing guns. The kit gives you plastic barrels as a one piece assembly that fits into the wing and is then covered by a leading edge piece that needs to be fitted into the wing leading edge. I have aftermarket barrels which I wanted to install later, so I wanted to simply install the leading edge covers. Needless to say, like similar pieces on other kits, these do not fit well and the seams will need work.

The good news is that once the wings are installed and glued into position, the wing roots fit well and will not require any seam work unless there is a step. I will endeavor to avoid that if possible.

I also wanted to get the landing gear started. It began with the main gear wells. These pieces have the landing gear strut molded to them which meant that if assembled as the instructions wanted, I would have had to deal with struts sticking out of the wings during all the subsequent work (including foiling the wings). Additionally, the inner main gear doors were molded as part of the inner wells and would also have been in the way. Not a desirable situation.

So I cut the struts near the wing and pinned them for future installation. The inner gear doors were cut away from the gear wells and these will be installed later as well. The tail wheel opening has a part that has the gear doors molded as one piece. This will need foiling on the outer surface of the doors, but the interior surfaces need to be painted first.

The main gear wells were painted and weathered, and the tail wheel door assembly was painted on the interior surfaces. I will foil the outer surface and install this later.

Really amazing progress, my friend @clipper! You are right, the bigger wings add a lot to the cool looks of the bird.
    Excellent job allover!

Just out of curiousity, still a few steps away, but I was wondering how to apply decals on this aluminum, can it be done as usual?

Thanks Spiros (@fiveten) and John (@johnb).

John, I believe the decals can be applied to the aluminum. I have not heard anything different. I am going to test this and check the videos I am using for reference.
