    G’day Carl (@clipper),
Great progress on a difficult build process - self inflicted 😊.
I’m looking forward to the completed aircraft.

This evening, I did something I've never done before, but which actually ended up being fairly pleasant. Normally for Halloween, we would have candy in a bowl and answer the door whenever someone rang the doorbell to pass out candy. But instead, tonight I took a chair and small folding table out on the front porch along with the bowl of candy and some P-47 parts that needed seam work. Also a small bluetooth speaker and a book I am reading on the 49th Fighter Squadron tin the Pacific. Between sessions where kids came around, I either read some from the book or worked on the seams of the P-47.

No one asked me what I was doing, but it did help to pass the time and I got some work done that I didn't particularly want to do anyway. The speaker played some of my music in the background, something I very much enjoy having around.

Tomorrow, I need to restore some surface detail on the wing and then I can start foiling the wing. I'm looking forward to seeing the entire model covered in foil.

The exterior on you P-47 is one of the best I have seen using foil, Carl (@clipper). I have also wondered about how to decal the foil. In my mind I always thought there was a clear coat first, but it makes sense that you could do it right over the foil. I think we were doing the same thing last night. I live in a fairly new neighborhood and it has evolved over the last 3 years that everyone sits outside and hand out the candy. It is almost like National Night Out, and all the adults are visiting and talking between the kids. My 4-year old granddaughter comes to our house to trick or treat, and helped pass out the goodies after she got back from here rounds.

A great idea to work on the P-47 at the same time, Carl @clipper
Hopefully the temperature was better to sit outside compared to what we have here, 5 degrees Celsius. 🙂

Thanks Spiros (@fiveten), George (@gblair), and John (@johnb).

It's been pretty warm here in Texas this last month so no problem sitting outside. In fact, I had to have a fan on for a little while because it was too warm.

I got the wings glued to the Thunderbolt. There were some fit issues and I had to use taping and some clamps to hold the parts in the position I wanted them in, but after removing those assistants, I found most of the seams to be okay. There are a few gaps, especially on the bottom side and even a small step on one spot underneath, despite my efforts to avoid these. I am going to let the glue dry for 8 hours or so before tackling the seam work.

The wingtip navigation lights fit well enough that I can add them later. They are solid clear pieces, so I will be doing the drill and fill with paint trick on those to simulate light bulbs. But that will come much later. Foiling the wing will be next after the seam work is finished.

Thanks Spiros (@fiveten) and John (@johnb).

THis morning I work on the seams from joining the wings to the fuselage. The bottom is where most of the work was needed. Also a bit at the wing tips. The topside wing root only needed an application of Vallejo Plastic putty and then wipe away the excess. But the bottom had several small steps and some sizable gaps which I had first filled with bits of styrene last night.

I cut away the excess and broke out the micro files to first flatten out the steps. Then some sanding to smooth out the file marks. Black CA was used to fill in the seams and then this was sanded with 400 grit and 1000 grit sanding sticks (wet).

After that, I restored surface detail panel lines and fasteners before moving on to starting the foiling of the wings. I decided to try a different way of applying the foil adhesive this time. Before, I was lightly sanding the backside of the foil with a 3000 grit sanding sponge, wiping it down with alcohol, applying glue to the foil and when it had dried, apply the foil to the model.

This time, I first wiped down the areas of the model I was going to foil in this one session, applied the glue to the model instead of the foil and then when it was dry, started applying the foil. This worked better and was faster because I could cut out the step of having to sand and wipe down the foil.

You have to use care to make sure the glue is not lumpy on the model. I used cotton buds to do the applications so I wouldn't have to keep cleaning the glue brush I was using previously. This saved time as well. So I am in work on foiling the starboard wing. The top is mostly finished except for the flap and aileron. The leading edge was finished after this photo was taken.

Corrections on those little gaps are done perfectly.

    Looks fantastic, my friend @clipper!
Quite interesting to see all those gaps at the underside joints, for some reason I thought that kit would have better fit.
Nevertheless, you treated those gaps beautifully!

Yes, When I first purchased the kit, I had not read any reviews on it, because I had assumed from my past experiences, that it was a good kit. In comparison to kits earlier than the 90s, it did have better detail, but it is one of the last kits I think that was designed and molds cut using older methods. You can see it in some lack of detail symmetry in the surface detailing and fit of parts. Still, it is a fairly nice kit, just can't be compared to what is available now.

Well, I am having difficulties with wrinkles on the trailing edges and wing tips of all the horizontal surfaces. This is a combination of the curves and the need to wrap the foil around the trailing edge because it tends to pull away if only on one side of the surface.

I've also identified a problem with inconsistent glue application which I am going to rectify with new disposable paint brushes. I was trying to use cotton buds, but it would not give a smooth enough application and tended to leave small bits of stuff which show through the foil.

For the trailing edge part, I am going to still wrap around the trailing edge, but stop just a little bit on the opposite side (underside) instead of trying to carry over to the next available panel line on the underside. I believe the wrinkles come about because there is still too much material that needs to be left intact after wrapping in order to be able to cover the lower areas. By reducing the amount of underside area to be covered in one shot, I hope to minimize wrinkling.

For the wing tips, its the tightness of the double curves which is causing issues. I just cannot get the foil to conform to this small of a curve regardless of what I do. The foil needs to wrap around these as well for the same reason as elsewhere, namely to avoid having the foil lift at edges.

So I am going to first try splitting the the foil lengthwise at the wing tip so that I only have to deal with a single curve. The foil would wrap around the wing tip outermost edge in line with the wing. There would be a small seam visible where the two pieces of foil meet, but that is preferable to wrinkles. If that doesn't work, then I will probably just paint those with Alclad.

I've already removed most of the bad foil, but there are a few remaining spots that I need to look at. I also have to get the disposable paint brushes. I'm using disposable brushes because even cleaning the brush immediately after glue application still leaves it stiff after it dries out. It also means I have to wait each time I use the brush (while it dries) before I can do another area. This slows down the work considerably.

I had been pushing to get the foiling done on the wings. But having to do this rework, has kind of let the wind out of my sails, so I am going to put this project down for a couple of days until I get the disposable brushes and am mentally ready to resume. In the meantime, I will get back on the Mohawk conversion.
