This was built concurrently with the -II Ko and is pretty much the exact same build up to the camouflage, which is highly unusual of dark blue-grey mottle over medium grey, with yellow rings around the hinomaru. Again I used the Osprey Ki-44 Aces book and Ronnie Olsthoorn's help on this.

For the base grey I chose C35 Mitsubishi Grey (a bit too light) and then proceeded with with spraying the markings and antiglare panel in the usual manner. For the squiggle mottle, I chose a mixture of 5 parts Tamiya LP-13 Grey Sasebo Arsenal and 1 part C71 Midnight Blue. Now, my mind knew what i had to do, but I had a very hard time translating that with my hand to the airbrush.

I started the camo but realized it didn't look right , so I sanded, and repainted the section and tried again. The main challenge I faced was to spray a random mottle, small enough so that there wasn't too much out of scale overspray, but it couldn't be too tight either. So my method would be to slowly build up the mottle , but this made them darker and less transparent and less like the mottle shown in the (updated) profile. I took a few days off to study the paint job, and then added more mottle to densify it. Any large overspray was removed with a light sanding with a 3000 grit sponge. Then the markings were cut and sprayed with C71 Midnight Blue.

A build wouldn't be complete a paint spill...sand, prime, aluminum, grey, mask hinomaru, spray mottle..

After many setbacks I was finally complete. The camouflage is not what I intended it to be, but I and still happy with the result. I may attempt this type of camo on a 33 Sentai Oscar (the basis of the profile) in hopes of mastering it.

    Thanks for stopping by

Woody, @wkubacki, your painting is wonderful!
Your patience and skills have persevered, the result is stunning. This is not one of the easiest patterns to paint. Your Shoki looks amazing!
